About The Position

The Head Athletic Trainer will work under the direct supervision of the team physician(s) to manage acute injuries and illnesses in athletes, implement rehabilitation procedures, and oversee the operation of therapeutic devices and equipment. This role involves the application of braces, guards, and tape, making referrals to physicians or health services, maintaining medical records, and coordinating annual athletic physicals. The Head Athletic Trainer is responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive injury and illness prevention program, attending practices and contests, and communicating effectively with students, parents, medical personnel, coaches, and staff. Additionally, the role includes providing physical conditioning training, preparing athletes for events, responding to emergencies, and establishing procedures for medical emergencies. The Head Athletic Trainer will also detect and resolve environmental risks, determine therapeutic goals, apply therapeutic modalities, and instruct athletes on exercise equipment. This position involves selecting, training, and supervising student assistants, assisting with the sports medicine program budget, and potentially conducting CPR, AED, and first aid training. Maintaining and filing all required records, overseeing training room operations, and managing inventory are also key responsibilities. Regular and reliable attendance is essential.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from a recognized, accredited college or university
  • Licensed as an Athletic Trainer by the Texas Department of Health
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Nice To Haves

  • National Athletic Trainers' Association certification preferred
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate preferred

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain effective communication with students, parents, medical and paramedical personnel, coaches, and other staff
  • Provide physical conditioning training to student athletes
  • Prepare athletes for games and practices by conducting evaluations and using tape, wraps, splints, braces, and other protective devices as needed
  • Respond to emergencies, identify acute injuries, make quick independent judgments, and provide first-aid triage including assessing injuries and deciding whether an athlete should seek further medical attention and should discontinue participation in the athletic event
  • Establish specific procedures to be carried out by a coach or assistant trainer in the event of a medical emergency
  • Detect and resolve environmental risks to athletes
  • Determine therapeutic goals and objectives for individual athletes and plan and implement a comprehensive rehabilitation and reconditioning program for injuries and illnesses sustained by student athletes
  • Apply therapeutic modalities and instruct athletes on proper use of exercise equipment
  • Select, train, and supervise student assistants
  • Assist in revising and implementing annual sports medicine program budget
  • May conduct annual CPR, AED, and first aid training and recertification of district personnel
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents including medical, accident and treatment records as required
  • Oversee training room operations including maintaining inventory of training supplies and equipment
  • Requisition additional supplies as needed
