About The Position

This role offers the opportunity to work in a unique operational environment supporting launch-related activities, facility operations, and mission-critical environmental programs. This position is contingent upon contract award. The Hazardous Waste Coordinator supports environmental compliance operations at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) through the management and oversight of hazardous, regulated, and universal waste activities in accordance with federal, state, local, and NASA environmental requirements. This role supports mission operations by ensuring compliant waste handling, spill preparedness and response coordination, inspections, documentation, and cradle-to-grave waste management activities across the Center. The position works closely with NASA personnel, operations teams, contractors, and regulatory stakeholders to support environmental stewardship, operational compliance, and risk reduction initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a related field
  • Minimum 3 years of hazardous waste management or environmental compliance experience.
  • Working knowledge of RCRA, DOT hazardous materials transportation requirements, and EPA regulations.
  • Experience performing hazardous waste inspections, manifesting, and waste characterization.
  • Ability to read and interpret environmental regulations and technical guidance documents.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate hazardous, regulated, universal, and special waste management activities.
  • Conduct hazardous waste pickups, inspections, labeling, packaging, storage, and transportation activities.
  • Maintain compliance with RCRA, DOT, TSCA, EPCRA, and other applicable federal, state, NASA, and Center-specific environmental regulations and procedures.
  • Manage waste characterization profiles, manifests, land disposal restriction (LDR) documentation, and cradle-to-grave waste tracking records.
  • Perform weekly inspections of Central Accumulation Areas (CAA) and annual inspections of Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAA).
  • Support hazardous waste contingency planning, spill preparedness, emergency response coordination, and post-spill waste management activities.
  • Coordinate waste transportation and disposal activities with approved Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facilities (TSDFs).
  • Maintain waste records, compliance documentation, and environmental data within government-designated tracking systems and databases.
  • Support regulatory inspections, audits, corrective actions, and compliance reporting activities.
  • Provide hazardous waste management guidance and on-the-job training to waste generators and site personnel.
  • Support waste minimization, sustainability, and environmental stewardship initiatives.
  • Support environmental compliance activities in support of NASA mission and facility operations.
  • Ensure hazardous waste activities are conducted safely and in accordance with site procedures and environmental requirements.
  • Develop, prepare, maintain, and support implementation of hazardous waste contingency plans as part of the Integrated Contingency Plan (ICP) program; provide hazardous waste management guidance and on-the-job training to waste generators and site personnel in support of environmental compliance requirements.
