About The Position

The University of California (USC) is a leading private research university located in Los Angeles. The Department of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) provides a safe and environmentally healthy workplace for students, employees, and the surrounding community. The Hazardous Waste Technician is responsible for collecting hazardous waste (biological, chemical, and radioactive) and universal waste at the point of generation and transporting it to USC storage facilities on both campuses (UPC and HSC), including Catalina Campus. This role also requires responding to hazardous material spills/releases.

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • 2+ years of college focused on chemistry/organic chemistry
  • Problem solving, time management, and organizational skills
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull 40-70lbs
  • Experience with Microsoft Office
  • Valid CA driver's license required
  • Participation in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 2 years of experience
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER or 24-hour FRO
  • CDL H Endorsement

Responsibilities

  • Collects, processes, and disposes of hazardous wastes from USC Campus locations.
  • Loads, packages, and segregates red bag/sharps, chemotherapy/pathology/pharmaceutical wastes, and medicines.
  • Responds to emergencies.
  • Assists with audits, sampling efforts, safety training, and emergency exercises.
  • Performs lab and equipment decommissioning and lab setups.
  • Maintains supply inventory to support hazardous/regulated medical waste programs, as required by DOT packaging requirements.
  • Maintains records and files on all program-related activities, as required.
  • Manages projects, including monitoring progress, setting deadlines, and solving issues that arise.
