About The Position

The Hazardous Materials Shipping and Receiving Specialist is responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient handling of gas cylinders and other hazardous materials across the UTHealth campus. Key duties include receiving, inspecting, tracking, storing, transporting, and returning gas cylinders; maintaining accurate inventory records in the DeMurrage Tank Tracking database; ensuring proper labeling, documentation, and safety compliance; coordinating pickups and deliveries with suppliers; conducting inspections and supporting audits; and operating a university vehicle. The role requires strong attention to detail, adherence to safety regulations, and a commitment to maintaining a safe environment for research and patient care operations.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent required
• 2 years of directly related experience required
• Ability to work well cross-functionally
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Proficient Microsoft Office and Computer skills.
• Excellent customer service skills displays a professional can-do attitude.
• Ability to lift up to 60lbs and is able to squat, bend, stoop, push, kneel and reach
• Ability to carry between 25-150 lbs.
• Work may involve handling biohazardous, chemical, and radiological materials, as well as operating associated equipment. Required safety training and appropriate engineering and administrative controls including the use of personal protective equipment must be followed.
• Driver License (DL) by State of Texas required
• Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.

Responsibilities

• Receives, inspects, and verifies hazardous material of gas cylinders shipments for accuracy, damage, and compliance with purchase order.
• Maintains an orderly flow of gas cylinders moving in and/or out of the warehouse and laboratory settings in various buildings across the UTHealth campus.
• Places a QR Code on received gas cylinders and scans/tracks all receipts and returns of all gas cylinder inventory into the DeMurrage Tank Tracking database daily.
• Ensures a copy of all invoices is turned in to the Manager at the end of the workday.
• Checks daily emails for empty gas cylinders pickups per customer request and prepares them for return to the supplier.
• Prepares outbound gas cylinders for loading, unloading, and transport of hazardous materials, including proper packaging, labeling, and documentation in accordance with safety standards and governmental regulations.
• Transports all gas cylinders to the appropriate location and verifies that all gas cylinders are left in an area approved by Environmental Health Safety UTHealth Safety.
• Ensures gas cylinders are properly chained at all times, and that proper segregation, storage, and containment of gas cylinders to prevent safety hazards.
• Arranges gas cylinder tanks to provide for accessibility, ready identification, and proper distribution.
• Conducts routine inspections of storage areas, gas cylinders, and safety equipment.
• Participates in safety training and drills to maintain readiness.
• Coordinates with suppliers to schedule pickups and deliveries, ensuring timely and secure transport.
• Assists in monthly and annual audits of gas cylinders.
• Operates and maintains a University vehicle and ensures that all maintenance is completed and logged.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
