About The Position

This role is within the Occupational Hygiene and Safety team, working closely with industrial occupational hygienists, hazardous materials specialists, professionals, and technologists. The technician will conduct onsite assessments and monitoring for public and private clients, supported by experienced professionals with opportunities for growth in autonomy. WSP invests in employee development through mentoring, training, job shadowing, and hands-on learning. The position is 90% fieldwork and 10% office, requiring travel across Alberta, Western, and Northern Canada. Paid overtime is available. Responsibilities include conducting field surveys, preparing reports, collaborating across disciplines, and contributing to client deliverables.

Requirements

  • Secondary Education is an asset and may include Occupational Hygiene Technician certificate (ROHT, CRST, etc.), diploma (Environmental Technology, Civil Engineering), technical/trade education, or B.Sc.
  • Eligibility for professional membership is an asset (i.e., CRSP, CIH, ROH).
  • Experience in occupational hygiene or hazardous materials (asbestos, lead, silica, etc.) is an asset.
  • Experience with abatement contractors is beneficial but not required.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication; proficiency with MS Office.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license, unrestricted, with reliable insured vehicle.
  • Ability to wear required PPE (respiratory protection, hard hat, hi-vis, FR coveralls, boots, glasses).

Responsibilities

  • Apply technical knowledge of methods, regulations, equipment, and procedures.
  • Make routine and non-routine decisions with guidance from your Project Manager.
  • Support projects by preparing and calibrating sampling equipment and identifying site issues with recommended corrective actions.
  • Conduct occupational hygiene and hazardous material assessments, including asbestos, mold, lead, and PCB evaluations.
  • Collect samples, interpret data, and prepare clear, accurate reports.
  • Analyze results against legislation and industry guidelines.
  • Supervise asbestos abatement activities.
  • Complete air quality assessments (IAQ, welding fume, noise, etc.).
  • Liaise with clients to ensure health, safety, and hygiene needs are met.
  • Participate in WSP’s Health, Safety, and Quality program and ongoing technical training.
  • Accommodate client schedules, including potential evening, overnight, and weekend work.
