About The Position

Provide standards-based virtual instruction to students in grades 6-12 enrolled in the Harbor Academy and Virtual Learning School (HAVLS), using district-approved online platforms and in alignment with Kentucky Academic Standards and Board policies. Plan, deliver, and monitor learning in a primarily asynchronous environment, maintaining high expectations for engagement, progress, and achievement while collaborating with students, families, and staff to support on-time credit attainment, graduation, and postsecondary readiness.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required.
  • Valid Kentucky teaching certification
  • Satisfactory criminal records check and any other background checks required by statute and Board policy.
  • Completion of all district- and state-mandated trainings (e.g., child abuse/neglect reporting, suicide prevention, bullying/hazing, confidentiality, bloodborne pathogens) within required timelines.
  • Adherence to all district technology/Acceptable Use policies and completion of required technology trainings.
  • Valid Kentucky teaching certificate; other endorsements or certifications as required by the district for assigned duties.
  • Knowledge of Kentucky Academic Standards and district curriculum expectations for grades 6–12.
  • Knowledge of best practices in virtual and blended instruction, including asynchronous learning, online engagement, and digital assessment.
  • Knowledge of instructional strategies appropriate for diverse learners, including students with disabilities, English learners, and at-risk students.
  • Knowledge of online learning platforms and educational technology tools (e.g., Edgenuity, Google Workspace, learning management systems, video conferencing tools).
  • Knowledge of district policies, HAVLS handbook procedures, and applicable state and federal regulations related to instruction, assessment, student records, and confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of principles of classroom and behavior management adapted for virtual environments, including communication norms and digital citizenship.
  • Knowledge of assessment practices, including formative and summative assessment, grading, and progress monitoring in a virtual setting.
  • Knowledge of effective oral and written communication skills for students, families, and colleagues.
  • Knowledge of child/adolescent development and social-emotional needs of middle and high school students.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and deliver effective virtual instruction to students in grades 6–12, aligned with the Kentucky Academic Standards and district expectations.
  • Ability to use online platforms and digital tools to facilitate instruction, monitor progress, and communicate effectively with students and families.
  • Ability to analyze student data (engagement, grades, assessments) and adjust instruction, pacing, and interventions accordingly.
  • Ability to implement IEPs, 504 Plans, and other accommodations in a virtual environment and collaborate effectively with special education and support staff.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, productive relationships with students, parents/guardians, administrators, and colleagues in a largely virtual context.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing, with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal on-site supervision, prioritize tasks, and meet timelines in a flexible, technology-rich environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with all district, state, and federal requirements regarding student information.
  • Ability to manage multiple courses and grade levels simultaneously while maintaining high expectations for student learning and engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and deliver virtual instruction for students in grades 6–12 using district-approved curricula and platforms (e.g., Edgenuity, Google Classroom, learning management systems) aligned to Kentucky Academic Standards.
  • Facilitate learning in a primarily asynchronous model by monitoring student activity, providing content support, and offering synchronous sessions, small groups, or individual conferences as needed.
  • Establish clear expectations for pacing, coursework completion, and course progression benchmarks, and communicate these expectations regularly to students and parents/guardians.
  • Evaluate student work, including online assignments, projects, quizzes, and tests, and provide timely, specific feedback that promotes mastery of content and skills.
  • Monitor student engagement, attendance (log-ins, participation), and academic progress; implement interventions and supports when students are not meeting HAVLS expectations.
  • Communicate proactively with students and families via email, phone, virtual meetings, and platform messaging regarding progress, concerns, and next steps.
  • Collaborate with counselors, administrators, and the virtual learning committee to address student performance concerns, probationary status, and possible transitions between virtual and in-person settings.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of individualized academic plans consistent with HAVLS handbook requirements and district graduation expectations.
  • Implement IEPs, 504 Plans, EL services, and other required supports in the virtual environment; collaborate with ARC/504/EL teams and attend meetings as required.
  • Support student participation in required local and state assessments, including in-person testing sessions, following district testing procedures and security protocols.
  • Use assessment and progress-monitoring data to adjust instruction, assign targeted supports, and inform communication with students and families.
  • Utilize district technology systems (SIS, Edgenuity, Google tools, communication platforms) for instruction, documentation, communication, and recordkeeping.
  • Model and reinforce appropriate digital citizenship and adherence to district technology and Acceptable Use policies.
  • Maintain accurate and secure records of grades, attendance, communication, accommodations, and interventions, in accordance with district policy and the HAVLS handbook.
  • Participate in professional learning related to virtual instruction, content standards, digital tools, student engagement, and behavior/academic supports.
  • Collaborate with school and district staff to support students’ social-emotional needs and connect families with appropriate school or community resources when needed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent/designee.
