About The Position

This position will inform and educate the community on identifying and reporting hate crimes and bias incidents. The person in this role will assist in implementing outreach plans and strategies developed by leadership and will assist in the development and distribution of outreach materials used for messaging the public on hate crimes and bias incidents; and how these can be reported. This role will receive training on what a hate crime is and what a bias incident is. Works under the direction of the Director of Human Services and the Navigator Supervisor and follows established program guidelines and procedures. Requires a 6-month evaluation period. Position is contingent upon continued funding.

Requirements

  • Two to three years experience working with immigrant communities and other marginalized communities
  • Experience in outreach, including planning outreach events
  • Bilingual in Spanish / English, written and spoken fluency
  • Experience in the nonprofit sector
  • Experience working effectively with other organizations including social service providers and government agencies
  • Experience handling sensitive or confidential information and maintaining discretion
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Valid driver’s license required for local outreach travel
  • Demonstrated interest in laws and policies affecting impacted communities
  • Presentation / facilitation skills
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead
  • Ability to operate telephone, desktop or laptop computer

Responsibilities

  • Attend meetings and participate actively in planning sessions with external partners
  • Assist in updating and maintaining outreach and education toolkits
  • Respond to phone calls and emails seeking information
  • Maintain and manage files on relevant resources, policy developments and partner groups
  • Organize methods for sharing information with community, including outreach, online and in person presentations
  • Build and maintain working relationships with community organizations, legal groups and government agencies providing assistance to people affected by hate crimes and bias incidents under program guidance.
  • Provide guidance to El Centro staff on answering questions from the community and serve as information resource for El Centro staff on issues relevant to hate crimes and bias incidents.
  • Coordinate with El Centro program staff to provide information and conduct outreach to program participants.
  • Receive referrals from El Centro staff for people needing information or services
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Attend regular meetings including supervisory, staff meetings and Charla
  • Prepare periodic reports as requested to supervisors, Board of Directors, and funders.
  • Carry out outreach and education activities using established program materials and procedures.
  • Escalates complex or sensitive situations to supervisor as appropriate
