Hardware Test Engineering Intern (Winter/Spring 2027)
About The Position
Formlabs is seeking a Hardware Test Engineering Intern for the Winter/Spring 2027 term. This role is crucial in testing 3D printers and collaborating with engineers to analyze findings, which will influence future product features and settings. The Hardware Reliability Engineering team focuses on ensuring products in development are reliable and ready for shipment, as well as addressing issues with existing products. Interns will work closely with design teams to identify and resolve product flaws, contributing to the creation of more robust systems. This is an onsite, full-time internship located in Somerville, MA, running from January to April.
Requirements
- Well versed with complex electromechanical systems and are passionate about understanding what it takes to make them work reliably.
- Experience developing full system test plans and know how to execute them in fast-paced product development timelines.
- Experience with testing a wide range of sensors, actuators, and mechanical components.
- Can prototype and run your own tests, from experimental setup to hardware and software implementation.
Nice To Haves
- Familiarity with Linux systems and scripting in various languages (Python preferred).
- Familiarity with HALT and HASS testing.
Responsibilities
- Develop, execute, and manage system, subsystem, and component level validation test plans to ensure products meet design and reliability requirements.
- Work with other teams to ensure a thorough system is completed.
- Perform hands-on and data-driven root cause analysis to triage field failures and electromechanical systems, utilizing common problem-solving methodologies and a "physics of failure" approach.
- Design, build, and implement automated testing equipment for subsystem characterization and reliability/environmental testing.
- Collaborate with the design team throughout product development to perform risk assessments, manage continuous testing, and contribute to design reviews.
