About The Position

We are seeking an engineer to evaluate hardware designed and purchased by our company, integrate it into our robots, and collaborate directly with suppliers, many of whom are based in China. This role involves testing new components, identifying their shortcomings, and working with supplier engineers, in Mandarin, to implement necessary changes. The position is based in Watertown, with significant time expected at supplier sites. As this area of work expands, there will be opportunities to hire and lead other engineers in similar roles.

Requirements

  • Experience developing hardware with suppliers or factories in China, having taken a product from prototype towards production.
  • Fluent in both Mandarin and English, capable of conducting technical discussions and writing specifications in both languages.
  • Broad hands-on skills, including the ability to debug systems with mechanical, electrical, and firmware components, and knowing when to involve specialists.
  • Comfortable working in a lab environment, including setting up tests, taking measurements, and documenting findings.
  • Willingness to travel extensively and frequently.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with robot arms, actuators, or motor drives.
  • Experience in hiring or leading engineers.
  • Previous experience living and working in China.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate new hardware: Test arms, actuators, sensors, and other components from suppliers against the requirements of our robots.
  • Integrate and test: Implement new hardware on our robots, identify performance issues, and ensure problems are resolved.
  • Work with suppliers' engineers: Spend time at supplier facilities to agree on modifications and maintain project momentum between visits.
  • Carry out requirements: Ensure that those building components for us understand our needs and the rationale behind them.
  • Build prototypes: Conduct small prototype builds and communicate findings back to the design team.
  • Travel: Dedicate approximately one-third to one-half of your time to travel, primarily to China.
