About The Position

We are seeking an engineer to evaluate hardware, integrate it into our robots, and work directly with suppliers, many of whom are in China. This is an engineering role where you will measure suppliers' hardware on the bench, review their designs, identify shortcomings, and collaborate with their engineers in Mandarin to implement solutions. Based in Watertown, you will spend significant time at supplier sites. As this area grows, there will be opportunities to hire and lead other engineers in this function.

Requirements

  • Depth in mechanical or electrical engineering: Demonstrated experience in designing hardware that has shipped, with the ability to articulate design decisions.
  • Working ability in the other discipline: Mechanical engineers should be able to read schematics and probe boards; electrical engineers should be able to read drawings and reason about loads and tolerances.
  • Experience developing hardware with suppliers or factories in China: Proven track record of taking a product from prototype to production with Chinese suppliers.
  • Fluent Mandarin and English: Ability to conduct technical discussions and write specifications in both languages.
  • Strong test and measurement habits: Experience building test setups, taking measurements, and documenting findings.
  • Willingness to travel: Prepared for long and frequent trips as part of the job.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with robot arms, actuators, or motor drives.
  • Firmware or embedded experience.
  • Experience hiring or leading engineers.
  • Time spent living and working in China.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate new hardware: Characterize arms, actuators, sensors, and other components on the bench, including torque, stiffness, backlash, thermal behavior, and electrical noise.
  • Review suppliers' designs: Read their drawings and schematics, identify weak points, and propose changes.
  • Integrate and test: Design mounts, harnesses, and interfaces to incorporate new hardware onto our robots, followed by rigorous testing.
  • Work with suppliers' engineers: Spend time at their sites, agree on necessary changes, and manage progress between visits.
  • Carry out requirements: Ensure that those building components for us understand our needs and the rationale behind them.
  • Build prototypes: Conduct small prototype builds and integrate learnings back into the design team.
  • Travel: Dedicate approximately one-third to one-half of your time to travel, including frequent and extended trips to China.
