About The Position

The Hardware System Integration Electrical Engineer will own key aspects of MacBook Air electrical system design and integration, defining, designing, and validating electrical subsystems. The role involves balancing performance, battery life, thermals, reliability, manufacturability, and industrial design within a space-constrained consumer product. The engineer will collaborate with mechanical engineering, Apple Silicon, software, and module technology teams, applying expertise in computer system architecture, circuit design, power delivery, high-speed interfaces, and PCB design to solve system integration challenges. As the Design Responsible Individual (DRI) for a subsystem, the engineer will present design proposals and tradeoffs, lead technical discussions, and build alignment through design reviews. Responsibilities extend through mass production, including partnering with manufacturing and operations to support factory builds, resolve line-down issues, investigate manufacturing issues and yield excursions, and implement design improvements that enhance product quality, manufacturability, and production efficiency.

Requirements

  • Solid understanding of design, validation, and debug requirements for common interfaces such as I2C, SPI, JTAG, and I2S, and high-speed interfaces such as USB, PCIe, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, and DDR.
  • Experience with schematic capture and constraint-driven PCB design using Cadence Allegro/OrCAD or equivalent EDA tools.
  • Experience with numerical modeling, simulation, and analysis tools, including SPICE, 2D/3D field solvers, and power and signal integrity analysis.
  • Experience with data analysis, visualization, and scripting to automate validation, debug, and engineering workflows.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Intellectual curiosity, creativity, collaboration, passion for solving challenging engineering problems, and commitment to continuous learning.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, with industry-level practical experience.
  • Strong electrical engineering fundamentals, including analog and digital circuit theory, signal integrity, and power integrity.
  • Experience in circuit design in one or more areas, including power, digital, analog, high-speed interfaces, programmable logic, or wireless systems.
  • Strong PCB layout expertise spanning constrained multilayer designs, high-speed interfaces, power delivery networks, flex circuits, and cable assemblies.
  • Proficiency with Allegro or equivalent PCB design tools.
  • Experience with electrical validation and debug using high-speed oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers, BERTs, and protocol analyzers.

Responsibilities

  • Design robust electrical subsystems and own schematic design, simulation, debugging, and validation.
  • Serve as the Design Responsible Individual for a subsystem and present design proposals and tradeoffs to cross-functional partners.
  • Drive technical discussions and build alignment through design reviews.
  • Own the subsystem through mass production.
  • Partner with manufacturing and operations to support factory builds.
  • Resolve line-down issues and investigate manufacturing issues and yield excursions.
  • Implement design improvements that enhance product quality, manufacturability, and production efficiency.
