About The Position

CLEAR is seeking a Platform Engineer to join its Hardware Operations and Platform Engineering team. The role sits at the intersection of site reliability engineering and embedded systems integration, supporting thousands of Linux-based kiosks as a distributed edge server fleet. The engineer will architect and maintain the software layer that keeps kiosks secure, reliable, available, and self-healing, supporting consistent experiences across CLEAR’s biometric kiosks. The position owns OS image management, over-the-air updates, device observability, and system recovery. It involves developing and maintaining Linux-based device systems and Python services that integrate with connected hardware, along with monitoring and reliability solutions for devices deployed at scale.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience administering embedded Linux systems.
  • Strong proficiency in Python for system automation, service orchestration, and hardware communication.
  • Experience integrating hardware through serial communications such as UART, RS-232, or USB-serial, and SDKs.
  • Deep knowledge of service dependencies, timers, and watchdog configuration.
  • Commitment to operational excellence and designing for resilience, testability, and safe rollback.
  • Collaborative, pragmatic, and curious approach, with comfort debugging kiosks in the field and improving CI/CD for edge devices.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with A/B update mechanisms such as RAUC, Mender, SWUpdate, or custom partition-switching logic.
  • Familiarity with network observability and remote device management at fleet scale.
  • Experience with Linux image tooling such as Yocto, Buildroot, bootc, or rpm-ostree.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and implement OS-level watchdogs, process monitors, and self-healing mechanisms, including service restarts, reboots, and rollbacks.
  • Manage and enhance the OTA update framework, including safe atomic updates through A/B partition swapping and automated rollback.
  • Develop and maintain Python services that communicate with peripherals such as payment terminals, scanners, and sensors through vendor SDKs and serial interfaces.
  • Own and maintain the custom Linux image, including systemd units, udev rules, and security policies for a locked-down production environment.
  • Build monitoring agents that stream logs, metrics, and telemetry such as connectivity, performance, and temperature to centralized observability systems.
  • Partner with software, SRE, and field operations teams to identify pain points and develop scalable solutions that improve reliability and ease of maintenance.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive healthcare plans
  • Fertility and adoption/surrogacy support
  • Flexible time off
  • Annual wellness stipend
  • Free OneMedical memberships for the employee and dependents
  • CLEAR Plus membership
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match
