About The Position

AEM (Advanced Environmental Monitoring) is the global leader in innovative mission critical weather, wildfire and water monitoring and intelligence solutions. We aim to be the world’s essential source for environmental insights – enabling decisive action and positive outcomes for our customers and their constituents. Our family of innovators offers world-class hydrometeorological technologies and services, including sensors, dataloggers, telemetry, and advanced analytics and software. Our technology and services empower the communities and organizations to survive – and thrive – in the face of escalating environmental risks. AEM is looking for a Hardware/Firmware V&V Test Engineer to support verification and validation testing of embedded products used in environmental monitoring applications, including dataloggers, telemetry devices, sensors, and related field equipment. This is a hands-on role focused on building test plans, writing and executing test cases, documenting results, and working with firmware, hardware, and software teams to identify issues and confirm fixes. The role is based out of the Langford office due to the hands-on nature of the work. There will be some opportunity to work from home depending on the work being performed, project phase, and equipment required.

Requirements

  • Degree or diploma in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or a closely related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience testing embedded hardware, firmware, or electronic products.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute test plans for embedded products.
  • Proven ability to investigate and clearly document hardware, firmware, or system-level issues.
  • Ability to create practical test plans from requirements, design notes, Jira tickets, and expected product behavior.
  • Experience creating clear defect reports with steps to reproduce, expected behavior, actual behavior, and supporting evidence.
  • Experience testing embedded firmware and hardware together as a system.
  • Strong hands-on troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to use multimeters, bench power supplies, serial terminals, and similar lab tools.
  • Comfortable working directly with firmware, hardware, software teams, and co-op test engineers.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Jira, Confluence, GitHub, Bitbucket, Jenkins, test management tools, or other development and test management systems.
  • Experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, or other advanced lab equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Experience setting up equipment for automated or semi-automated testing.
  • Experience programming test equipment or building repeatable bench test setups.
  • Experience with environmental monitoring products, dataloggers, telemetry devices, sensors, or low-power embedded systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop verification and validation test plans for embedded hardware and firmware products.
  • Write, maintain, and execute test cases and test scripts.
  • Test firmware and hardware against requirements, specifications, and intended product behavior.
  • Set up and configure test hardware, sensors, power supplies, communication cables, and supporting equipment.
  • Reproduce, isolate, and document defects clearly enough for firmware and hardware teams to investigate.
  • Maintain clear test records, evidence, results, and defect reports.
  • Prepare test work for co-op test engineers, including test scope, setup instructions, expected results, and required evidence.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision and technical guidance to co-op test engineers.
  • Leverage AI-assisted tools to improve test design, coverage analysis, documentation, and scripting.
