Hardware Engineer, Autonomy Platforms

Bedrock Robotics Inc•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

As a Hardware Engineer on the Autonomy Platforms team, you will architect, source, build, and bring to life the hardware systems that enable autonomy on Bedrock’s machines. You will collaborate across product, commercial, perception, behavior, controls, platform integration, supply chain, and other teams to agree on hardware functionality and system decomposition. Working alongside other hardware engineers, you will develop components and ensure platforms meet performance requirements and operate reliably in harsh deployment environments. The role involves designing, characterizing, integrating, and validating autonomy hardware for autonomous machines. You will help establish system and component hardware architecture, lead external vendor relationships and programs, contribute to cohesive and modular platform systems, partner with the safety team to define requirements and performance metrics, and develop reusable software for data analysis and test automation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience designing and testing autonomy hardware such as sensing, compute, HMI, connectivity, and machine control interfaces.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of hardware engineering, including electrical design, high- and low-speed communication protocols, power electronics, hardware bring-up and testing, and deployment in rugged outdoor environments.
  • Experience leading large hardware development programs from ideation through prototype, EVT, DVT, and production stages.
  • Experience with at least some of the following: high-performance or high-power edge compute, including multi-CPU x86 or ARM platforms with significant GPU resources and power and cooling; autonomous sensing technologies such as lidar, cameras, radar, RTK GNSS, and IMU; remote operator stations and safety-critical human interfaces; rugged HMI deployment; rugged-system packaging and integration; high-speed signaling such as GMSL, multi-gigabit Ethernet, and RF.
  • Proficiency in compiled languages (C, C++, or Rust), Linux shell, or Python, with the ability to prototype and debug hardware-system software components and conduct tests, data collection, analysis, and reporting.

Nice To Haves

  • Six or more years of relevant industry experience.
  • Experience with heavy machinery hydraulic systems, including electronic control.
  • Experience with high-performance embedded compute, particularly the Nvidia Jetson lineup.
  • Experience with high- and low-speed communication protocols such as GMSL, FPD-Link, PCIe, multi-GigE, A2B, CAN, UART, SPI, and RS232/422/485.
  • Experience with system engineering requirements definition and verification and validation.
  • Experience with high-power LED lighting for scene illumination.
  • Experience with common hardware deployment standards for construction, such as ISO 26262, ISO 16750, and SAE J1455.
  • Familiarity with the basic electrical and mechanical hardware and interfaces of large commercial construction equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, characterize, integrate, and validate autonomy hardware.
  • Help define system- and component-level hardware architecture for autonomous machines.
  • Establish and lead relationships and programs with external vendors to deliver critical components and systems for autonomous hardware platforms.
  • Work with hardware platform engineers to create a cohesive, high-performance, flexible, and modular system.
  • Work with the safety team to establish requirements and performance metrics for components and systems.
  • Write reusable, high-quality data analysis and test automation software using Python and/or C, C++, or Rust.
