Hardware Engineer, Autonomy Platforms

Bedrock Robotics•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Bedrock is hiring a Hardware Engineer for its Autonomy Platforms team to architect, source, build, and bring to life hardware systems that enable autonomy on construction machines. The role works with product, commercial, perception, behavior, controls, platform integration, supply chain, safety, and other engineering teams to define hardware functionality and system decomposition. The engineer collaborates with other hardware engineers to deliver high-performing, reliable platforms designed for harsh deployment environments. The position covers designing, characterizing, integrating, and validating autonomy hardware, from system and component architecture through vendor programs and system integration. It also includes writing reusable, high-quality software for data analysis and test automation. Bedrock retrofits heavy equipment, beginning with excavators, to support autonomous work on commercial construction sites.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience designing and testing autonomy hardware, such as sensing, compute, HMI, connectivity, and machine control interfaces.
  • Foundational knowledge of electrical design, high- and low-speed communication protocols, power electronics, hardware bring-up and testing, and deployment in rugged outdoor environments.
  • Experience leading large hardware development programs from ideation through prototype, EVT, DVT, and production stages.
  • Experience in one or more of the following: high-performance or high-power edge compute, including multi-CPU x86 or ARM platforms with significant GPU resources and power/cooling considerations; autonomous sensing technologies such as lidar, cameras, radar, RTK GNSS, and IMUs; remote operator stations and safety-critical human interfaces; rugged HMI deployment; packaging and integration of high-performance hardware for rugged environments; or high-speed signaling such as GMSL, multi-gigabit Ethernet, and RF.
  • Proficiency in compiled languages such as C, C++, or Rust; Linux shell scripting; or runtime languages such as Python, with the ability to prototype and debug hardware-system software and conduct tests, data collection, analysis, and reporting.

Nice To Haves

  • Six or more years of relevant industry experience.
  • Experience with heavy machinery hydraulic systems, including electronic control.
  • Experience with high-performance embedded compute, particularly the Nvidia Jetson lineup.
  • Experience with high- and low-speed communication protocols such as GMSL, FPD-Link, PCIe, multi-GigE, A2B, CAN, UART, SPI, and RS232/422/485.
  • Experience with system engineering requirements definition and verification and validation.
  • Experience with high-power LED lighting for scene illumination.
  • Experience with hardware deployment standards for construction, such as ISO 26262, ISO 16750, and SAE J1455.
  • Familiarity with basic electrical and mechanical hardware and interfaces on large commercial construction equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, characterize, integrate, and validate autonomy hardware.
  • Help define system- and component-level hardware architecture for autonomous machines.
  • Establish and lead relationships and programs with external vendors to deliver critical hardware components and systems.
  • Work with hardware platform engineers to develop a cohesive, high-performance, flexible, and modular system.
  • Work with the safety team to establish requirements and performance metrics for components and systems.
  • Write reusable, high-quality data analysis and test automation software using Python and/or C++, C, or Rust.
