Hardware Engineer, Core Technology

Anduril•Costa Mesa, CA

About The Position

The Hardware Engineer for Special Projects serves as Core Tech’s go-to technical problem solver, deployed across the portfolio to address the highest-priority engineering gaps. Projects may involve hardware integration, customer demonstrations, test automation, production-yield visibility, or process bottlenecks. Work is short-duration and high-impact, ranging from a few days to a few months, and spans hardware, software, testing, manufacturing, and process domains. The role suits an engineer who can move fluidly among mechanical hardware, electronics, software, and systems-level work, and who prefers solving varied technical challenges over owning a single subsystem. The engineer works across design engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, test, quality, and operations. They diagnose and resolve cross-functional problems, deliver technical demonstrations, develop software and analysis tools, improve operational visibility, identify gaps arising from rapid development, and provide timely systems-level analysis and trade studies. The position requires comfort with ambiguous scope, shifting priorities, and hands-on problem solving.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Systems Engineering.
  • At least 5 years of engineering experience spanning at least two of the following: systems engineering, electromechanical hardware, embedded electronics, test/integration, software or scripting, and manufacturing engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to move between disparate technical domains and deliver results without an extended ramp-up period.
  • Hands-on hardware experience, such as designing fixtures, debugging assemblies, running tests, or working on a production floor.
  • Working proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language, such as Python, MATLAB, or C++, with demonstrated application to test automation, data analysis, or tooling.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to brief executives, write technical reports, and document procedures for other engineers.
  • Comfort operating with ambiguous scope and shifting priorities, including defining problems as well as solving them.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science in Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with 3D CAD tools and engineering drawings/GD&T.
  • Familiarity with thermal or structural analysis tools.
  • Experience developing MBSE artifacts or system architecture models.
  • Background in defense or aerospace systems, particularly communication systems, avionics, or autonomous platforms.
  • Experience building demonstrations or technical packages for customer engagements.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes for electromechanical assemblies, PCBAs, or drive systems.
  • Exposure to mission-level modeling and simulation.

Responsibilities

  • Own and execute short-duration, high-impact technical projects across Core Tech, spanning hardware, software, test, manufacturing, and process domains.
  • Diagnose and resolve cross-functional technical issues, including integration failures, test escapes, supplier quality problems, and production-line bottlenecks.
  • Plan and execute customer and internal demonstrations, including defining demo architecture, coordinating resources, preparing technical materials, verifying system readiness, and running the demo.
  • Develop test software, automation scripts, and data-analysis tools to close verification gaps, improve test coverage, or reduce manual effort.
  • Build dashboards, reports, and data pipelines that provide engineering and leadership visibility into yield, test results, and other operational or test metrics.
  • Identify and bridge gaps that emerge from rapid development cycles, including documentation and technical debt.
  • Perform system-level analysis and trade studies to inform architecture decisions, component selection, and integration strategy.
  • Work with design engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, test, quality, and operations teams to resolve problems that fall across team boundaries.

Benefits

  • Highly competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers.
  • Top-tier benefits for full-time employees, available at little to no cost to employees.
