Hardware Electronics Design Engineer

Stellantis•Auburn Hills, MI

About The Position

Stellantis is seeking a Hardware Electronics Design Engineer for its Hardware Electronics group, which develops automotive technology experiences. The engineer will contribute to the design, development, launch, and production of ZCU/BMS hardware, collaborating with project management, hardware platform design, software development, product validation, and electronic manufacturing services teams and suppliers. The role includes specifying and designing automotive ZCU/BMS boards; gathering and defining application requirements and deliverables; supporting scalable hardware architecture and platform development; and helping establish requirements for cost, size, weight, power, performance, safety, and schedule. The engineer will also support cybersecurity and functional safety implementation, establish quality benchmarks and standards, and provide technical support during design and product validation. The work requires analyzing schematics, datasheets, user manuals, processor architecture, memory options, automotive ICs, electrical I/O, automotive networks, and log files or traces.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or a similar field.
  • At least 8 years of experience working on electronics design.
  • Experience with circuit simulations and Worst Case Circuit Analysis.
  • Experience creating Hardware-Software Interface Specifications (HSIS).
  • Experience with schematic capture software and eBOM variant handling.
  • Hands-on, industry-relevant experience in electronic hardware development.
  • Strong knowledge of analog and digital design and circuit analysis, including power management ICs, HSD, LSD, smart drivers, MCUs, and digital logic.
  • Experience supporting hardware component validation, including electrical, EMC, ESD, and environmental validation.
  • Hands-on hardware testing experience using instruments such as oscilloscopes, electronic loads, signal generators, and spectrum analyzers.
  • Strong teamwork and oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to multitask, solve problems with attention to detail, identify and escalate potential development roadblocks, and work collaboratively as both a team member and task leader.
  • Ability to present concepts, strategies, and project status to large groups.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in electronics engineering.
  • Experience with hardware development for automotive products at a Tier 1 or Tier 2 supplier.
  • Experience designing electronics that operate from -40°C to 105°C ambient temperature.
  • Experience with Altium Design schematic capture and variation handling.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety standards, including ISO 26262.
  • Experience with D-FMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis).
  • Familiarity with automotive electronics standards, including automotive EMC/EMI and environmental test standards, design factors of safety, and product verification.
  • Solid understanding of system and component design.
  • Solid understanding of HSD, LSD, H-bridges, and half-bridges.
  • Solid understanding of ETH, CAN FD, LIN, and LVDS communication protocols and troubleshooting tools.
  • Ability to think outside the box in high-pressure situations and remain self-confident, empowered, and self-starting.
  • Respect for customer-supplier relationships and commitment to partnership and collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Steer ZCU/BMS development, launch, and production in collaboration with project management, hardware platform design, software development, product validation, and EMS suppliers.
  • Contribute to specification and design of ZCU/BMS boards for automotive systems.
  • Work with internal customers to understand and specify application requirements and deliverables, including Product Functional specifications, Hardware-Software Interface Specifications (HSIS), and functional safety.
  • Support investigation of scalable architecture alternatives and development paths for ZCU/BMS hardware platforms.
  • Support establishment of scalability, cost, size, weight, power, performance, safety, and schedule requirements for next-generation hardware platforms.
  • Support hardware implementation of cybersecurity and functional safety requirements for ZCU/BMS.
  • Create quality benchmarks and standards, and provide technical expertise on quality standards to internal technical teams, suppliers, and partners.
  • Provide hardware technical support for Design/Product Validation (DV/PV), working with the STLA Product Validation team and EMS suppliers.
  • Analyze schematics, datasheets and user manuals; understand processor architecture, memory options, automotive ICs, electrical I/O, and automotive networks; and analyze log files and traces.
  • Support hardware component validation, including electrical, EMC, ESD, and environmental validation.
  • Perform hands-on hardware testing using laboratory instruments.
