Hardware Design Engineer

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc•Santa Clara, CA

About The Position

AMD is seeking a Principal CAD PCB Physical Design Engineer for its Network Technology Solutions Group (NTSG). The role is responsible for PCB physical design and technology development for NTSG products, including next-generation networking and server products. It is a senior-level, hands-on technical leadership role involving collaboration with silicon design, board design, signal and power integrity, and manufacturing teams. The engineer will guide PCB designs from initial concept through mass production, balancing electrical and mechanical/thermal requirements with component availability and manufacturing constraints. The position is located in Santa Clara, California, and is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Extensive experience in PCB physical design for high-speed and high-power systems.
  • Strong background in electronic fundamentals.
  • Expertise in PCB design software such as Cadence Allegro.
  • Deep knowledge of PCB layer types, including copper, silkscreen, and solder mask, and component models such as symbols and footprints.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical, thermal, signal-integrity, and power-integrity considerations.
  • Familiarity with PCB manufacturing processes and standards.
  • Hands-on experience balancing technical requirements from hardware engineers with manufacturers’ practical constraints.
  • Excellent problem-solving and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform PCB physical design for high-speed and high-power boards from initial concept through mass production.
  • Optimize component placement, high-speed signal routing, and critical power planes.
  • Create design constraints based on requirements from hardware design, signal/power-integrity, and mechanical/thermal engineers.
  • Ensure complex system layouts meet electrical and mechanical/thermal specifications.
  • Adapt designs to component availability and manufacturing limitations.
  • Resolve PCB physical design issues and ensure a smooth transition from design to production.
  • Generate manufacturing and assembly packages, including Gerber and ODB files.
  • Build strong relationships with engineers and manufacturers to reduce redesign risk.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to advance product development while keeping projects on schedule and within scope.
  • Stay current with PCB physical design innovations and technologies.
