The YWCA Habilitation Specialist plays a vital and compassionate role in supporting individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities within both adult and child respite programs. This position is dedicated to fostering a safe, inclusive, and empowering environment where participants are encouraged to build independence, develop life skills, and experience meaningful social connections. Working closely with participants, families, and interdisciplinary teams, the Habilitation Specialist implements individualized service plans tailored to each person’s unique strengths, goals, and needs. Through patience, empathy, and creativity, they provide hands-on support with daily living activities, promote positive behaviors, and facilitate engaging recreational and educational experiences. This role is rooted in dignity and respect—ensuring every individual feels seen, heard, and valued. The Habilitation Specialist serves not only as a caregiver, but also as an advocate, mentor, and trusted support, helping participants thrive while providing families with peace of mind and essential respite. Grounded in person-centered practices and aligned with OPWDD standards and core competencies, this role blends structure with heart--supporting not just safety and participation, but growth, independence and joy.
