About The Position

Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health New York provides programs and services for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and dual diagnoses. The Habilitation Counselor performs the important role of helping individuals to maximize their independence and reach their human potential. They will actively participate in the development and implementation of individualized goals/treatment plans and will complete progress assessments designed to track improvements and identify additional areas of need, leading to the individual’s higher quality of life. This position will attend clinical meetings and participate in the reporting out of behavior data for the designated program. They will also confer with individuals to discuss their options and goals so that goals and supports can be developed, and will facilitate and partake in the monthly communication with families/guardians to discuss individuals and complete documentation as required. The Habilitation Counselor will supervise and/or assist individuals in the implementation of program plans, provide for the individuals’ health and physical needs, and provide and ensure a safe environment. Additional skills may be required for site specific roles, including day habilitation, medical support, program activity, or overnight support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, or related degree required.
  • Previous experience preferred (not required) working with individuals with psychological, emotional and/or behavioral disorders, complex post-traumatic stress disorder, co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders, and/or autism spectrum disorders.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Proficient communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills (Proficient in Outlook, SharePoint, EHR, Microsoft Office).
  • Valid driver’s license must be maintained.
  • Ability to administer CPR.
  • Ability to administer first aid.
  • Ability to properly administer physical interventions as trained to maintain the safety of individuals supported.
  • Ability to create and maintain a therapeutic milieu.
  • Regularly requires walking, standing, stooping, bending, and pushing/pulling (1/2 to 3/4 of the workday).
  • Seldom requires sitting.
  • May require lifting up to 50 lbs. (1/4 - 1/2 of the workday).
  • Requires repetitive wrist/hand movement (3/4 to 4/4 of the workday).
  • Range of hearing and vision sufficient to operate standard office machines and communicate with co-workers and stakeholders in person and via telephone.
  • Free of dependency and abuse of illegal or illicit drugs, alcohol, inhalants, or other chemical substances or controlled substances.
  • Often drives a Devereux vehicle or van.
  • Regularly works inside in areas that are adequately lighted and ventilated (1/2 to 3/4 of work time).
  • Some fluctuation in temperature.
  • Also, regularly works outside.
  • May work in wet conditions (<1/4 of work time).
  • Zero-tolerance policy for abuse and maintains policies and procedures to systematically reduce the risk of abuse to occur in our organization.
  • Cooperate with the authorities to the fullest extent possible.
