About The Position

Mercy School for Special Learning, a part of the Diocese of Allentown, is seeking a part-time Gym Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. This role is responsible for developing students' understanding of the relationship between body function and exercise, motivating them towards physical fitness and healthy habits, and discovering their talents in physical achievement. The teacher will foster strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination through various physical activities and sports, tailored to each student's ability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Physical Education or related field.
  • PA Teacher certification in Health and Physical Education.
  • Thorough understanding of the curricular elements of Physical Education.
  • General knowledge of K-8 Physical Education curriculum.
  • Love of Physical Education, teaching, and children.
  • Desire to nurture and shape the lives of students.
  • Appreciation of the developmental and age characteristics of students.
  • Enthusiasm for the mission of the school.
  • Desire to work collaboratively with fellow faculty members.
  • Clear records of Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check (PATCH), Pennsylvania Child Abuse History, and Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal Background Fingerprint Check (at least 1 year old).
  • Attendance at a Protecting God's Children class and Mandated Reporter Training.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous teaching experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement PE classes for special needs students ages 4-21, exposing them to a variety of activities, games, and sports.
  • Emphasize activities that promote lifelong physical fitness and good sportsmanship.
  • Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythm, dance, and individual, dual, or team sports.
  • Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of sports, rhythms, and body movement.
  • Provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  • Ensure appropriate safety instruction and conduct safety checks on equipment and field areas.
  • Maintain control of school-owned property, including uniforms, equipment, and instructional aids, and keep required inventory records.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior to create an orderly and productive environment.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.
