About The Position

The Salvation Army’s Springfield Corps. is hiring a Gun Violence Prevention Educator. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and teaching educational programs aimed at reducing gun violence for at-risk youth. The educator will work with various stakeholders, including schools, community organizations, law enforcement, and local government, to promote gun safety, awareness, and conflict resolution strategies for at-risk youth. The role involves delivering training, conducting workshops, and supporting efforts to prevent gun violence through proactive education and community engagement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, public health, criminal justice, or a related field (Master's degree preferred) or 10 years’ experience
  • Certification in violence prevention or conflict resolution.
  • Proven experience in community outreach, violence prevention, or education, with a focus on gun violence or related areas.
  • Experience in program development, evaluation, and reporting.
  • Experience working with youth, families, or marginalized communities.
  • Strong understanding of gun violence issues, prevention strategies, and relevant laws and policies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Passionate about community education, social justice, and reducing violence
  • Bilingual or multilingual proficiency.
  • Knowledge of local gun violence data, trends, and community resources.
  • Sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or occasional continuous basis.
  • Grasp, push, pull objects such as reference materials, files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to load and to change settings, devices, fixtures, on various equipment used in and around an office environment
  • Operate telephone and other electronic communication devices.
  • Operate various other office equipment including personal computers, copiers, fax machines, and scanning equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. occasionally.
  • Ability to travel throughout the Division

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement educational programs focused on gun violence prevention, including gun safety, conflict resolution, and emotional regulation strategies.
  • Create curriculum and training materials tailored to different age groups and community demographics.
  • Lead and facilitate workshops, seminars, and outreach activities to raise awareness and educate youth about the risks of gun violence.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with local schools, community organizations, and other stakeholders to promote gun violence prevention initiatives.
  • Organize and participate in community events, forums, and discussions to increase awareness and build partnerships.
  • Provide resources and support to community members and families affected by gun violence.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of gun violence prevention programs.
  • Collect data through surveys, focus groups, and feedback to assess program outcomes and community impact.
  • Prepare and submit regular reports on program progress, community engagement, and educational outcomes.
  • Represent the organization at local government meetings, community gatherings, and other public forums to advocate for policies that reduce gun violence.
  • Engage in public speaking opportunities to educate diverse audiences about the importance of gun violence prevention.
  • Work closely with law enforcement agencies, local officials, and other partners to support gun violence prevention strategies and policies.
  • Collaborate with mental health professionals and social service agencies to address the root causes of violence and offer support to those impacted.
  • Develop and distribute educational materials, such as pamphlets, posters, and digital content, to inform the community about gun violence prevention measures.
  • Provide training to school staff, parents, and other community leaders on identifying warning signs of violence and how to respond effectively.
  • Assist in the coordination of crisis intervention services for individuals or families impacted by gun violence.
  • Offer guidance and resources to those who have experienced gun violence to help them heal and rebuild.
