About The Position

The Guide Setter is responsible for preparing, installing, inspecting, adjusting, and maintaining mill guides and related equipment to ensure the Mill is properly configured for safe and efficient production. This position prepares guides, roller boxes, and associated tooling, performs inspections and preventative maintenance, interprets setup drawings, verifies equipment readiness, and supports mill startup activities. The Guide Setter works closely with the Roll Change Group Lead, Lead Roller, and Mill Adjuster to ensure guide assemblies are properly configured to support product quality, equipment reliability, and efficient production.

Requirements

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.
Strong mechanical aptitude.
Ability to read mechanical drawings and setup documentation.
Ability to safely use hand, pneumatic, and precision measuring tools.
Ability to work safely in a heavy industrial manufacturing environment.
Strong attention to detail.

Previous roll change or mill experience.
Experience with guide installation and adjustment.
Experience reading blueprints or mechanical drawings.
Welding and torch experience.
Manufacturing or steel industry experience.

Responsibilities

Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and work instructions.
Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Perform assigned work safely around heavy equipment and suspended loads.
Identify and report unsafe conditions.
Participate in required safety meetings and training.
Prepare guides and roller boxes for scheduled production.
Inspect guide assemblies for wear or damage.
Verify spring lengths, water bearings, and guide components.
Assemble guide components according to production requirements.
Ensure guide assemblies are production-ready prior to mill startup.
Install guides and roller boxes.
Grind guides to required rolling specifications.
Align and adjust guide assemblies.
Verify guide positioning and clearances.
Assist with startup adjustments as required.
Support efficient mill startup.
Inspect guide equipment for excessive wear.
Perform routine preventative maintenance.
Replace worn guide components.
Report equipment deficiencies requiring repair.
Assist in maintaining guide inventory and tooling readiness.
Support scheduled roll changes.
Assist the Roll Change Group Lead during mill changeovers.
Coordinate guide preparation with roll installation activities.
Assist the Lead Roller and Mill Adjuster during startups.
Support uninterrupted mill operations.
Inspect assigned tools prior to use.
Maintain measuring devices and guide-setting equipment.
Report damaged tools and equipment promptly.
Maintain organized workstations.
Support Franklin Industries' housekeeping and 3S initiatives.
Maintain clean and organized work areas.
Store guides, tooling, and equipment properly.
Remove debris and unnecessary materials.
Communicate effectively with: Roll Change Group Lead, Mill Adjuster, Lead Roller, Roll Change Associates, Maintenance Department.
Communicate guide issues, equipment concerns, and startup observations promptly.
Support teamwork throughout the Roll Change and Mill Departments.
Participate in Lean and continuous improvement initiatives.
Recommend improvements to guide preparation, changeover efficiency, and equipment reliability.
Support implementation of approved improvements.
Assist other departments as operational needs require.
Participate in special projects.
Perform other duties as assigned.
