About The Position

AHRC New York City is seeking a Guidance Counselor for the AHRC Middle/HS program located in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn. This role involves providing direct support and counseling services to students, families, and staff within a 10-month program. The Guidance Counselor will work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams, conduct social case histories, and assist in developing treatment and transition plans for students with developmental disabilities. The position also includes providing in-service training and workshops, referring families to external resources, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and ethical standards.

Requirements

  • NYS Certification Pupil Personnel Services – Guidance Counselor
  • Ability to work effectively with staff and students with developmental disabilities.
  • Knowledge of developmental disabilities and appropriate therapeutic intervention techniques.
  • Ability to communicate and develop cooperative working relationships with staff, families and other agencies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain statistical and data records pertaining to stated responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Interviews families and conducts/reviews social case histories.
  • Provides direct support services to individual students, small groups, and classrooms.
  • Provides counseling services as mandated.
  • Treats psychological disorders and adaptive delays to effect improvement.
  • Provides counseling to students and/or families.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary and child/student study teams in developing treatment programs for students.
  • Provides in-service training and workshops for staff and families.
  • Provides counseling for families.
  • Collaborates in the integration of transition activities and development of transition goals.
  • Refers individuals/families to appropriate resources for needed services and post-secondary options.
  • Performs all duties necessary for compliance and relevant regulations governing service provision, including record-keeping.
  • Serves as a member of various department-wide education and/or agency committees.
  • Provides services to students in a legal and ethical manner.
