About The Position

Tallahassee State College (TSC) is seeking a dedicated Guidance Counselor for the Tallahassee Collegiate Academy (TCA). This full-time position involves implementing a comprehensive school counseling program to assist students in acquiring skills and knowledge for maximum achievement in a safe learning environment. The role includes advocating for students, collaborating to narrow the achievement gap, and fostering a positive learning culture. Responsibilities involve counseling individuals and groups on academic, career, and personal/social concerns, assisting with educational and career planning, and working with students on scheduling needs. The counselor will serve as the dual-enrollment liaison, implement dual-enrollment degree pathway plans, and consult with school-based teams for appropriate student placement, including exceptional student education, 504 determination, and MTSS meetings. This role also leads the 504 Program, student intervention meetings, and serves as the graduation coach. Collaboration with teachers, administration, support staff, community agencies, and parents is essential. The counselor will support teachers in delivering counseling curriculum, complete suicide risk assessments, and serve on the Mental Health Team. Communication with community agencies for mental health, homeless resources, and other support services is also a key function. The position requires identifying and analyzing critical student data to develop impactful strategies, adhering to national, state, and district counseling standards, and utilizing appropriate technology for counseling services.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling
  • State of Florida School Certification in School Counseling (grades PK-12)

Responsibilities

  • Implements the comprehensive school counseling program as outlined in the Schools Professional Counselor plan.
  • Acts as an advocate for all students.
  • Works in collaboration with other stakeholders in narrowing the achievement gap.
  • Provides professional leadership to establish a culture conducive to learning.
  • Counsels individual and/or small groups of students with academic, career and personal/social Concerns.
  • Assists students in developing a plan for achieving educational, career, and personal/social goals.
  • Works with Assistant Principal on student scheduling needs.
  • Serves as the dual-enrollment liaison between the high school and the college.
  • Implements dual-enrollment degree pathway plans for individual students.
  • Consults with a variety of school-based teams to facilitate appropriate placement decisions to enhance student achievement, which includes but is not limited to exceptional student education staffing, 504 Determination Meetings, and MTSS/Problem-Solving Team.
  • Serves as the 504 Program lead and serves as the lead for the school’s weekly student intervention meetings.
  • Serves as the graduation coach for the school.
  • Confers with classroom teachers, administration, support staff, community agencies and parents regarding students and their needs.
  • Provides support to teachers in the delivery of counseling program related curriculum.
  • Completes suicide risk assessments when needed as according to law.
  • Serves with the Dean of Students as part of the Mental Health Team.
  • Communicates with community agencies on behalf of students when needed including but not limited to: mental health resources; homeless student resources,; second harvest resources; DCF contacts and resources.
  • Coordinates with school and community agencies to broaden students’ resources.
  • Seeks resources necessary to achieve school goals.
  • Guides individuals/groups of students through the development of educational plans, career awareness and personal/social growth issues.
  • Identifies and disaggregates critical data, such as grades, test scores, attendance, promotion rates, graduation and postsecondary enrollment rate.
  • Uses data to develop strategies to positively impact students.
  • Follows guidelines of the national, state and district standards for professional school counselors.
  • Adheres to ethical and legal professional standards.
  • Uses appropriate technology for counseling services.
