About The Position

This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs Grant. YMCA Day Camp Group Leaders enjoy working in a fun, fast-paced environment facilitating activities and games for children ages 5 - 12. This role is ideal for someone looking for summer work with a values-driven non-profit organization, interested in facilitating fun and creative activities and games, and making a real difference in kids’ lives. It's also a great opportunity to build valuable career experience toward a future in childhood education.

Requirements

  • Experience working with children ages 5-12
  • Valid Emergency First Aid and CPR – B or C & AED
  • 20 hours of training in Child Development and/or Child Guidance
  • Available to work full time hours for entire contract
  • Experience working with children ages 5-12 with additional support needs
  • Be between 19 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations. International participants are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a Behavioral Internationalist or Support Worker an Asset
  • Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate games and activities for campers
  • Engage and build relationships with campers.
  • Work effectively within a staff team to provide an inclusive environment of support, strategies, and resources for children with diverse needs to fully participate within the program.
  • Help to build and contribute to a community environment of global supports and inclusion for all children through supporting their strengths and stretches.
  • Help children navigate conflict and role model positive behaviours.
  • Contribute to the development, integration, and maintenance of care plans within the program
  • Ensure all campers are safe and supervised at all times.
  • Follow all YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Be professional (be on time, appropriately dressed, ensure confidentiality, etc.)
  • Step in and assist any children requiring support to ensure their emotional, social, and physical needs are met, whether through supporting kids to transition, helping them to regulate or providing tools and strategies.
  • Be flexible and float to support where it is needed most.
  • Build relationships with the children attending camp.
