About The Position

The Group Leader is responsible for the direct supervision, engagement, and overall well-being of an assigned group of participants in the COMPASS Afterschool Program. This position leads the daily implementation of program activities and creates a safe, structured, and engaging environment where children can learn, explore new interests, develop social-emotional skills, and build positive relationships. Working collaboratively with the Program Director, Program Supervisor, and Activity Specialist, the Group Leader supports the delivery of high-quality youth development programming that aligns with DYCD COMPASS standards.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least two (2) years of direct experience working with children under age 13.
  • Experience working with school-age children in an afterschool, childcare, school, recreation, camp, or community-based setting.
  • Ability to lead and supervise groups of children in a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate manner.
  • Ability to create and implement activities under the guidance of an Activity Specialist/Instructor or Content Specialist.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, organization, and group management skills.
  • Must have the necessary content knowledge, experience, and skills to effectively support program activities.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Ability to work in-person in New York City (NYC)
  • Ability to travel to other Rising Ground Sites (if required)

  • Associate’s degree preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise an assigned group of children during daily COMPASS program activities.
  • Create and implement age-appropriate activities under the guidance of the Content Specialist and/or Activity Specialist/Instructor.
  • Support implementation of required COMPASS content areas, including Social and Emotional Learning, Physical Activity and Healthy Living, Academic Support, STEAM and Literacy, Introduction to College/Careers, and Life Skills Development.
  • Maintain active supervision of participants during activities, transitions, snack/supper, restroom breaks, dismissal, field trips, and special events.
  • Support positive behavior, conflict resolution, teamwork, youth voice, and positive peer relationships.
  • Foster a safe, welcoming, culturally responsive, inclusive, and strengths-based environment for all participants.
  • Assist Activity Specialists/Instructors with lesson delivery, materials, group management, and participant engagement.
  • Communicate participant needs, behavioral concerns, incidents, and program updates to the Content Specialist and/or Program Director.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, activity records, incident reports, and other required documentation as assigned.
  • Build positive relationships with children, families, school staff, program staff, and community partners.
  • Other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
