About The Position

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Holds a key position in the delivery of Group Fitness/Cycle/Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi classes to all participants. This responsibility will include safe and effective classes while providing a variety of options for all fitness levels. Provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for participants in group fitness classes.

Requirements

  • CPR, AED, Basic First Aid certification.
  • Nationally recognized Group Fitness Certification (AFAA, ACE)
  • Program specific certifications (i.e. Les Mills programming, Freedom Barre, BANG! Power Dance, etc.)
  • Must be able to demonstrate proper form and technique in accordance with current national group fitness standards and/or program specific standards
  • 1-3 years of teaching experience
  • Creates/provides high quality classes with average attendance.
  • Actively participates in Y events (at least one per year).
  • Must display an outgoing, positive personality with participants, both on and off site.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Blood borne Pathogen Training
  • Maintain current CPR, AED and First Aid Certifications
  • Maintain updated YMCA Code of Conduct Training annually
  • Maintain Group Fitness Certification
  • Maintain specialty certifications as set forth by program developer.

Nice To Haves

  • If teaching class that requires a program specific certification (Les Mills Programming, ZUMBA, Freedom Barre, BANG) certification must remain current per program requirements.
  • Continuing Education is required on a yearly basis as needed to maintain Group Fitness Certification or specialized programs and to help stay current with industry standards and trends.
  • The instructor must also have the ability to instruct, guide and work with individuals of multi-level skills and capabilities, while demonstrating proper form and technique.
  • A high degree of energy and strong endurance is required while physically completing the workout along with participants.
  • Effective and efficient time management, demonstrate the capacity to lead /coach participants, organizational skills and the ability to exemplify a “Y-Voice” that demonstrates determination, genuine concern, welcoming attitude and a nurturing, positive spirit are a must in this position at all times.
  • Emphasis on supporting and exemplifying the ”Y-Voice” when in contact with members, participants, staff and community both on and off Y grounds.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs fitness classes in accordance with nationally recognized group fitness standards, workout is prepared ahead of time.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with participants; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Encourages involvement/participation at Y sponsored events and identifies potential volunteers.
  • Maintains accurate class attendance records.
  • Starts and ends class promptly.
  • Conveys information on fitness programs and schedules and as appropriate refers participants to try other fitness classes.
  • Secures qualified substitute well in advance and notify supervisor of change.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
  • Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Organizes and lead class participants to put away needed class equipment in proper storage location.
  • Reports damaged equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
