About The Position

The Group Exercise Instructor will develop and instruct safe and impactful exercise programs that meet the needs of the members, program participants, and the community. Requirements

  • Previous experience and training in instructing group exercise classes and developing own choreography or willingness to gain experience and develop further skills under YMCA guidance.
  • Current CPR/AED/Basic First Aid Certification.
  • A current professional Group Exercise instructor or Specialty Certification if applicable (YMCA, ACE, AFAA, NETA, ACSM, NASM).
  • Working knowledge of proper exercise equipment use if applicable, good body mechanics and healthy exercise practices.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries and verbal face to face requests as well as written requests.
  • Ability to effectively present information in a clear, understandable language in a group situation.
  • Ability to apply logical thinking to a wide variety of practical problems.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and design and implement work processes.
  • Ability to meet the association standard for attendance, punctuality and dependability.
  • Possess the ability to handle multiple tasks and demands.
  • Demonstrates a high tolerance for interruptions and varied routine.
  • Proven desire to “take charge” of areas of responsibilities.
  • Ability to keep confidences related to office and personnel matters.
  • Ability to work successfully with many types of people.
  • Complete the following trainings within 90 days of hire: Orientation to Healthy Living at the Y, Principles of Member Health and Wellness and Group Exercise at the Y
  • Participation in YMCA of Southern Maine in-service for on-going education.
  • Maintain current certifications (required recertification courses offered by YMCA of Southern Maine).
  • A clean record as determined through criminal background check and fingerprinting through the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS).

Responsibilities

  • Understands different health needs in order to adjust activities and program to serve all.
  • Creates a safe environment in which all individuals feel welcomed and respected.
  • Intentionally connects members and program participants to one another.
  • Finds coverage for classes when unable to instruct and provides sub assistance for others.
  • Communicates appropriately with individuals based on readiness to change.
  • Identifies and celebrates the successes of members and program participants.
  • Displays empathy in support of helping member and program participants build confidence to achieve their health and well-being goals.
  • Ensures all equipment is clean, in working order and maintenance records are properly maintained; reports any concerns to appropriate personnel.
  • Understands and aligns delivery of Healthy Living programs to program goals and objectives.
  • Promotes our brand by wearing provided YMCA clothing during all working hours unless otherwise specified.
  • Understands how individuals, families, organizations, communities and societies impact health.
  • Helps to create new approaches to serve Healthy Living needs of members and program participants.
  • Familiar with risk factors associated with chronic disease and social determinants of health.
  • Helps others to create health and well-being goals and develop skills to achieve those goals by establishing long-term behavior change.
  • Understands how health inequities impact health outcomes among people of different backgrounds and how to offer culturally competent support.
  • Strives to provide sustained impact for individuals and the community through all Healthy Living programs and services.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Adheres to all Y Brand guidelines and receives prior approval for use and creation of any Y related social media from the Marketing department.
  • Is an advocate to the Y by promoting our cause. Assists with the annual campaign by increasing awareness about the campaign within the Y community.
  • Learn and actively utilize UKG Employee Portal on a consistent basis.
  • Other duties as required.
