About The Position

Waubonsee Community College is seeking a full-time Groundskeeper to enhance and maintain the plant life and overall grounds of all its campuses. This role is crucial in maintaining the visual appeal and health of the college's outdoor spaces. The position reports directly to the Grounds Supervisor and the Director of Buildings, Grounds and Events. The Groundskeeper will be responsible for the care of existing grounds, developing plans for new landscape areas, and ensuring the health of all plant life. This role also involves participation in snow removal, specialized treatments, coordination of contractors, operation and maintenance of grounds equipment, and assisting with special events and controlled burns.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of related experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, horticulture, turf management, or a related outdoor maintenance field
  • Experience operating commercial grounds equipment
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License
  • Possess or be willing to obtain: Illinois Pesticide Applicator’s License
  • Possess or be willing to obtain: CDL Class B License

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree in Horticulture, Turf Management, Landscape Management, Plant Science, Natural Resources, or related field
  • CDL Class B License with airbrake endorsement
  • Commercial snow removal experience
  • Two years of training in a horticulture or landscaping program
  • Previous experience in an educational environment

Responsibilities

  • Maintains appearance of existing grounds and develops plans for additional landscape or natural areas in order to enhance the visual appearance of the college campuses.
  • Maintains care of all plant life on campus, in order to maintain overall appearance and health of all Waubonsee Community College campuses’ plant life.
  • Works as a participant in the snow removal plan.
  • Coordinate with the Grounds Supervisor and perform specialized treatments and applications on all outdoor surfaces.
  • Coordinate, design and supervise the care of decorative plantings and landscape beds.
  • Diagnose problems with landscape areas, grounds equipment and recommend corrective measures.
  • Assist with the coordination of contractors on grounds projects.
  • Operate large power mowers, edgers, hand tools, and college vehicles associated with grounds maintenance and improvements.
  • Perform maintenance and repair on all Buildings and Grounds equipment.
  • Assist with special events for set ups and removal of exterior signage, cones and crowd control.
  • Assist with controlled burns.
  • Perform additional duties as may be assigned by the Grounds Supervisor and Director of Buildings, Grounds and Events.
