About The Position

Provide care and maintenance to improve the aesthetics of the University campus. Maintain athletic fields in playing condition for practices and games. Rearrange and/or accommodate requests that will assist in functions on the grounds areas. Maintain or seek assistance providing a safe and secure environment. Perform minor repairs and report major repairs, vandalism or damage to supervisor.

Requirements

Knowledge of construction sufficient to construct and repair simple structures.
Knowledge of motorized equipment and tools sufficient to operate them and perform simple repair and maintenance.
Knowledge of methods of lawn and garden care sufficient to prune, mow, fertilize, weed, seed and sod as necessary.
Basic knowledge of chemical fertilizer or pesticide application and related safety practices.
Ability to maintain and make ordinary repairs of groundskeeping tools, machinery, and equipment.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to work outside most of the time, and in adverse weather conditions occasionally.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of SMSU campus and grounds
Knowledge of horticulture techniques and practices including planting schedules, germination intervals, and transplantation
Ability to project facility garden needs and order seeds, plants and supplies operating within a restricted budget.

Ability to train and direct the work of less experienced groundskeepers or work crews sufficient to assign responsibilities and inspect finished work.
