About The Position

UW Facilities has an outstanding opportunity for a Grounds Supervisor I to join our team. Reporting to the Manager of Program Operations, the Grounds Supervisor I is responsible for supervision and management of assigned crews including leads, grounds and utility worker personnel in the development and care of the University of Washington grounds, upholding a standard that meets required specifications, budgetary constraints, and University policies.

Requirements

  • Two years of college training in botany, horticulture, landscape, forestry, or allied field AND two years of experience in grounds maintenance, nursery, parks, or related activity; at least one year of which must have been a lead.
  • Washington State Public Pesticide Operator’s License or obtain license within 120 days of employment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills and a proven ability to work successfully with people at all levels throughout the organization and with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to maintain professional behavior, tactfulness and composure in a fast paced, dynamic, customer service-driven environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Able to analyze complex information, define problems, and develop and implement creative, cost-effective solutions.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or related field.
  • Certified as a Landscape Technician by the Washington Association of Landscape Professionals (WALP)
  • Certified Sustainable Landscape Professional (WSNLA)
  • Experience implementing process improvement initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience/proficiency with a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Demonstrated success in supervising trades personnel, such as gardeners and utility workers involved in the grounds maintenance of the landscape, pathways, green roofs, trees and stormwater infrastructure.
  • Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations to promote a safe work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Executing the grounds maintenance program through the direction and supervision of crew leads, gardeners, and utility worker employees.
  • Supervise leads and other assigned personnel in the removal of snow and ice, and the application of ice melt and sand during inclement weather.
  • Conduct regular project site visits and scheduled landscape evaluations with area gardening crews.
  • Ensure work is completed on schedule, within budget and that all work order financial documentation is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Responsible for the overall supervision, development, and management of assigned staff personnel.
  • Monitor, inspect and assess employee performance, providing feedback necessary to meet performance standards.
  • Address and resolve employee performance and behavioral issues.
  • Positively support all management directives and actively promote the purpose and foundational values of M&C.
  • Ensure adherence to M&C protocols and all University and UW Facilities policies and procedures including the UW Facilities Leadership Standards, Individual Accountability Protocols (IAP), and Management Accountability Protocols (MAP).
  • Communicate with Maintenance Zone personnel, and other M&C shops, as well as Facilities partners such as Engineering Services (ES), Campus Architecture and Planning (CAP), and Project Delivery Group (PDG) to facilitate work.
  • Know and ensure that assigned personnel comply with occupational health and safety regulations that apply to work actions and conduct on the job, including Safety Data Sheet (SDS) instructions, and the use of personal protective equipment whenever required.
