The Grounds Supervisor I works at Alexander Correctional Institution in Taylorsville, North Carolina, a closed-custody, all-male prison with a capacity of 1,252 beds. Requirements

High school diploma or GED and three years of progressive experience in grounds upkeep, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

Documented knowledge of horticulture practices and techniques applicable to the layout and upkeep of formal gardens and grounds.
Documented knowledge of ornamental shrubs, plants, and flowers and their uses in landscape work.
Ability to adjust and make minor mechanical repairs to equipment such as tractors, mowers, disks, and rakes.

Responsibilities

Complete work assignments received through the MMS work order system and from the Maintenance/Construction Supervisor.
Mow and edge lawns; remove leaves, trash, and snow; and trim trees and shrubs as required.
Apply pesticides and select plants and trees suited to the local climate.
Sketch landscape plans for undeveloped areas, identifying plants, trees, sidewalks, roads, and other features.
Prepare requisitions for grounds department supplies, materials, and equipment, and provide expenditure estimates for grounds and equipment maintenance.
Ensure grounds equipment has current service records and is cleaned regularly.
Make minor mechanical repairs to equipment such as tractors, mowers, disks, and rakes.
Supervise skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled labor, including offenders, and ensure compliance with OSHA safety guidelines.
