About The Position

This position involves performing journey-level maintenance, repair, diagnosis, troubleshooting, construction, fabrication, and preventive maintenance in groundskeeping and landscaping at the Kino Sports Complex. The role requires technical skills, specialized experience, and knowledge in grounds maintenance, with potential training in leadership or supervision. The Grounds Specialist is responsible for overseeing activities and ensuring services and products meet established standards, including written procedures, engineering drawings, specifications, contracts, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience performing duties in landscape, grounds maintenance, arborist, equipment operator, general handyman or similar duties in a specific skill, craft, vocation, trade or operational area of employment.
  • Possession of an Arizona certification as an herbicide/pesticide applicator license (Category #3-Ornamental and Turf).
  • Valid driver license is required at time of application.
  • Valid AZ driver license with clean driving record is required at time of appointment.
  • The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures.
  • Qualifying education and experience must be clearly documented in the "Education" and "Work Experience" sections of the application.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum three (3) years experience with irrigation systems on native turf soil and sand base fields.
  • Minimum three (3) years experience applying herbicide and pesticides.
  • Minimum three (3) years experience with/knowledge of sporting field layouts.
  • Minimum three (3) years experience in major league quality turf maintenance or landscaping.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience with computers including scheduling, inventory, and incident reporting.
  • Minimum one (1) year leadership experience that includes public speaking, working with vendors, customers, and construction, landscaping, and project managers.
  • Some positions may require possession of a valid Arizona Commercial Driver License (CDL) with appropriate endorsement(s) at the time of appointment or prior to completion of an initial/promotional probation period.

Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled analysis and repairs of groundskeeping equipment, systems, and vehicles.
  • Leads others in highly-skilled fabrication or modifications of existing or proposed groundskeeping equipment, facilities, systems, or their components based on verbal directions, sketches, plans, engineering drawings, or technical references.
  • Inspects, services, and maintains assigned groundskeeping tools, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Conducts quality control analysis on equipment or supported systems to ensure proper functioning and takes remedial actions as needed for optimal operations.
  • Inspects, approves, or certifies the work of others if certified or authorized to do so.
  • Maintains comprehensive records of activities, operations, services, and usage related to groundskeeping vehicles, equipment, and systems.
  • Prepares oral and written reports on groundskeeping activities.
  • Provides estimates for unique or complex operations, maintenance, and special projects based on rough sketches, engineering plans, or drawings, and documents the use and expenditure of materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Prepares sketches and drawings to communicate necessary information for proposed or ongoing groundskeeping work to supervisors, subordinates, and contractors.
  • Coordinates activities within the groundskeeping unit with other units, agencies, or contractors to optimize resource use and minimize service disruptions.
  • Monitors contractor performance, including goods and services provided by contractors.
  • Conducts on-the-job training for employees within the groundskeeping unit.
  • Handles, stores, uses, and disposes of hazardous materials encountered or generated during groundskeeping activities.
