Contra Costa Water District is seeking a dedicated Grounds Maintenance Assistant to join the Operations and Maintenance team. This position plays an important role in maintaining and repairing a wide range of CCWD's properties and facilities including; Los Vaqueros Watershed, Los Vaqueros Mitigation Properties, and Aquatic and pesticide application areas along the USBR right-of-way. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys hands-on outdoor work, operating equipment, and contributing to the maintenance of beautiful and environmentally significant landscapes. The Grounds Maintenance Assistant position offers opportunities for additional pay through incentive programs. Employees who voluntarily obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may receive a 5% pay differential for a Class A CDL or a 2.5% pay differential for a Class B CDL. Employees who hold and maintain a valid State of California Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) and are assigned vegetation management spray duties may also be eligible for a $100 monthly incentive pay. Additionally, employees who maintain a QAC “F” Aquatic endorsement and perform aquatic weed-control work may also be eligible for an additional $300 monthly differential. Enjoy working across diverse landscapes and facilities, including over 20,000 acres of Los Vaqueros Watershed, extensive trail systems, paved and unpaved roads, reservoirs, ponds, and mitigation properties spanning multiple counties. No two days are the same. You’ll gain experience performing a wide range of grounds maintenance, vegetation management, repair, and equipment operation duties in both developed facilities and natural open space areas. Work alongside knowledgeable and experienced staff while developing practical skills in grounds maintenance, vegetation management, irrigation systems, equipment operation, and environmental care. Requirements

  • Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work; to sit, stand, and walk on level, uneven, or slippery surfaces; frequently reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, grasp, and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to operate varied hand and power tools and grounds maintenance equipment; to operate a motor vehicle and visit various District sites; and vision to inspect and operate equipment.
  • The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards.
  • Finger dexterity is needed to operate and repair tools and equipment.
  • Employees must possess the ability to carry, push, pull, and lift materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds with the use of proper equipment.
  • Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances and fumes, dust, and air contaminants.
  • Employees may be exposed to blood borne pathogens.
  • All CCWD positions includes successfully passing a Department of Justice Live Scan fingerprint check and completion of the federal Employment Eligibility Verification Form I-9.
  • Additionally, in compliance with federal law, CCWD participates in E-Verify.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the health and appearance of the CCWD's waterways, reservoirs, pump stations, canals, and surrounding grounds through weed abatement work, including safe and compliant application of herbicides and pesticides.
  • Maintains and enhances landscaped areas by planting, cultivating, and caring for lawns, flower beds, shrubs, hedges, and trees.
  • Helps ensure reliable irrigation and drainage systems by troubleshooting issues, performing basic maintenance, and replacing sprinkler components as needed.
  • Prepares work areas for maintenance and improvement projects by digging, shoveling sediment, and supporting general grounds preparation activities.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of tools and equipment used in grounds and facility maintenance, such as mowers, tractors, woodchippers, spray equipment, chainsaws, pole saws, backhoes, boats, and UTVs.
  • Provides support for Utility Worker or Utility Worker – Canal duties when not assigned to equipment operation.
  • Keeps accurate records of work completed, materials used, and equipment operated to support accountability and operational tracking.
