About The Position

The Grounds Equipment Operator provides safe and presentable grounds and athletic fields by operating a variety of equipment in the care and maintenance of District grounds, lawns, plants, trees, and fencing. This role involves driving and operating various machinery, maintaining athletic fields, performing installations and repairs, and managing inventory and paperwork. The position also requires supporting positive public relations and adhering to district policies.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Four years of grounds maintenance and heavy equipment operation experience
  • A valid Class A Commercial Arizona Driver's License
  • Skill in safely operating heavy equipment commonly used in grounds maintenance.
  • Knowledge of general grounds and landscaping techniques.
  • Skill in following safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer experiences, including but not limited to interacting tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Commitment to create and sustain a thriving learning and working environment for students and staff.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to use initiative within organizational policies, procedures and guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Drives and operates equipment to include trucks, tank trucks, and tractors with a variety of attachments, jackhammers, air compressors, cement mixers, heavy rollers, backhoes, sweepers, crane, aerators, and mowers.
  • Grades, levels, mows, and maintains athletic fields and grounds.
  • Installs and repairs concrete, asphalt, and concrete block as needed.
  • Installs and repairs chain link fences.
  • Plants, trims, and fertilizes lawns, shrubs, trees, and grounds.
  • Adjusts and lubricates tools and machinery.
  • Maintains assigned equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintains supply inventory, requisitions supplies, as necessary.
  • Maintains paperwork (electronic or hard copy) and processing of work orders.
  • Estimates cost of materials and labor in relation to job.
  • Makes emergency service calls.
  • Assists other departments with tasks and projects as needed.
  • Supports the relationship between the Phoenix Union High School District and the public by demonstrating courteous and professional behavior when interacting with students, parents, visitors, and school staff.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and school information.
  • Follows Governing Board Policies.
  • Performs all other related duties as required or assigned.
