About The Position

The Grounds Director is a hands-on supervisory position responsible for the management and appearance of the campus grounds. This role involves overseeing grounds staff, managing contractors, and ensuring the campus amenities, including turf, landscaping, floral areas, shrubbery, and trees, are maintained to provide an exceptional visual experience. The Grounds Director also plays a key role in resident events, attends resident meetings, participates in budgeting, and stays current with industry best practices and technological advances. This position serves as a company liaison with city and county departments, utility companies, and other external stakeholders, requiring professionalism and exceptional customer service.

Requirements

  • Current driver's license in good standing with the state of Kansas.
  • Good driving record and meet all organizational and insurance company requirements to drive company vehicles.
  • Ability to read and understand English.
  • Must be bondable, insurable, and pass a complete background check.
  • Must follow federal, state, and organizational regulations and guidelines, including those related to resident rights.
  • High school or equivalent diploma.
  • Supervisory experience in grounds management profession.
  • Strong working knowledge of turf management, irrigation systems, landscaping installation and maintenance, drainage systems, and flower, tree, and shrub care.
  • Basic working knowledge of general plumbing and electrical systems and devices.
  • Basic working knowledge of grounds-related equipment and tools including mowers, trimmers, trenchers, tractors, skid-steers, etc.
  • Certification to apply related chemicals including herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers.

Nice To Haves

  • Certifications in related areas of study, e.g., Master Gardener certification.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain all aspects of the campus grounds and related services.
  • Monitor and ensure the upkeep of turf, landscaping, floral and ornamental areas, shrubbery, and trees.
  • Manage related contractors, greenhouse operations, snow and ice removal, storm response, and campus safety practices.
  • Supervise grounds staff, including hiring, disciplinary actions, evaluations, and terminations in conjunction with Human Resources.
  • Ensure supervised employees complete required training and comply with the Employee Handbook.
  • Ensure employees work within safety guidelines when operating equipment, using tools, working at heights, and around people.
  • Assist with resident activities and events, including planning, setup, take down, trash removal, traffic control, and manning activity areas.
  • Attend meetings with residents and respond to concerns.
  • Participate in budgeting and fiscal management, adhering to expense guidelines.
  • Provide a campus operations plan to the COO for the coming growing season by February 1st annually.
  • Stay current with technological advances and industry best practices through seminars, webinars, and research.
  • Communicate with leadership as per established guidelines.
  • Participate in employee education requirements and attend mandatory meetings.
  • Exhibit professionalism and provide exceptional customer service to stakeholders.
  • Work cohesively with other departments.

  • Stays current with technological advances and industry best practices via seminars, webinars, and other forms of collaboration, research, and education
  • Communicates with leadership per guidelines and mechanisms established by the COO
  • Participates in employee education requirements, attends mandatory meetings, and abides by policies and procedures in the Employee Handbook
  • Exhibits professionalism and provides exceptional customer service to stakeholders at all times and works cohesively with other departments
