We are seeking a certified Ground-Based Pressure Systems NDE Technician to support NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) initiatives in Huntsville, Alabama. This role emphasizes hands-on nondestructive examination (NDE) and testing (NDT) for ground-based Pressure Vessels and Systems (PVS) to ensure safety and compliance. The technician will work closely with engineers to perform inspections, contributing to mission success in a high-stakes aerospace environment. Work will primarily be at MSFC, with potential support at other NASA sites or contractor locations, and occasional travel.

  • Certification in accordance with American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) SNT-TC-1A for NDE methods (Levels 1, 2, or 3 as required), including VT, MT, PT, UT, ET, PAUT, PMI, leak detection, hardness testing, and acoustic emission.
  • Proficiency in national consensus standards relevant to NDE/NDT, such as ASME acceptance criteria.
  • Ability to perform NDE/NDT inspections and interpret data for pressure systems.
  • Knowledge of calibration procedures and maintenance for NDE equipment.
  • Physical capability to perform in-field inspections, including bending, looking under equipment, climbing stairs/ladders, and working in confined spaces or at heights.
  • Excellent communication skills for collaborating with diverse personnel (e.g., engineers, technicians, scientists).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Facility Security Clearance and comply with NASA security requirements (e.g., NPR 1600.1, HSPD-12).

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's degree in a technical field preferred.
  • Additional certifications, such as radiographic testing (RT) or from the American Welding Society (AWS) for welding inspection.
  • Prior experience in NASA or aerospace projects, particularly with MSFC or high-reliability environments.
  • Familiarity with NASA-specific PVS standards and tools like SafeSuite.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to offsite locations (e.g., SSC, KSC, or contractor facilities in CA or UT).

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, coordinate, and participate in walkdown inspections to gather data and evaluate the condition of PVS components, piping, tubing, and vessels, including indoor/outdoor settings, elevated heights, and confined spaces.
  • Conduct in-field inspections using NDE/NDT techniques, such as visual (VT), magnetic particle (MT), dye penetrant (PT), ultrasonic test (UT including shear wave, thickness measurements, and phased array UT (PAUT)), eddy current test (ET), positive material identification (PMI), leak detection, hardness testing, and acoustic emission test.
  • Interpret inspection data using ASME acceptance criteria.
  • Ensure NDE equipment calibration remains current per manufacturer specifications.
  • Communicate frequently with Pressure Systems Engineers, Technical Leads, NASA Pressure Systems Managers, system owners/users, supervisors, and management via in-person meetings, email, phone, and Microsoft Teams.
