About The Position

The primary responsibility of the Grossing Technician position is the gross examination and dissection of histological specimens. In addition, this person will provide support for the gross area, including order entry, maintenance of equipment, cleaning, and other related tasks. Personnel falling under this job title will be performing high complexity testing and, as such, are required to meet the high complexity testing personnel requirements as described in the CLIA regulations (42CFR493.1417 and 42CFR493.1489(b)). Avero Diagnostics operates on a 24/7/365 basis; individuals may be required to work various shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Schedule flexibility with and without advanced notice is required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; college degree is a plus.
  • Active and valid US State-Issued Driver’s License with acceptable motor vehicle record as defined and approved by the company’s vehicle insurance carrier.
  • An earned associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution, OR Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
  • Understanding and use of personal protective equipment and universal precautions.
  • Understanding of medical terminology.
  • Understanding of arithmetic/algebra, basic anatomy and chemistry are beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with regulations and protocols for accurately grossing incoming specimens within their expertise.
  • Processes incoming specimens in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Comply with established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, and infection control procedures.
  • Assists the Pathologists in a professional manner when needed while grossing.
  • Maintains the department in a professional manner.
  • Performs order entry of cytology and histology specimens using current LIS.
  • Accurately labels, prints cassettes, and prepares specimens for grossing.
  • Documents and communicates all QA incidents appropriately.
  • Assists Pathologists and the Pathologist Assistant on frozen section procedures.
  • Cleans and maintains all equipment in area.
  • Performs other related tasks as directed.
