About The Position

This position is for a Grossing Technician in a Lab Histology Pathology setting. The role involves accessioning, verifying specimen and CPT code accuracy, preparing specimens for gross description, and grossing tissue. It also includes selecting sections for microscopic review according to pathologist protocol, preparing frozen sections, and maintaining specimen integrity. The technician will also perform routine histology tasks such as embedding, cutting, and staining slides, maintaining slide and block files, and ordering send-out tests. Additionally, the role requires maintaining stain setups, preparing Pap, Gyn, and Non-Gyn specimens, and ensuring an orderly and clean work environment. Promoting patient safety goals is also a key aspect of the job.

Requirements

  • Associates degree or at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) from a regionally accredited college/ university with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry.
  • Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Light to medium physical demand capabilities.
  • Ability to make appropriate decisions related to patient care needs.

Responsibilities

  • Accessions, verifies specimen accuracy, and CPT code accuracy.
  • Prepares specimens for gross description.
  • Grosses tissue and selects sections for microscopic review according to pathologist protocol.
  • Prepares frozen sections.
  • Maintains the integrity of the specimen.
  • Communicates the status of specimens with pathologist and co-workers.
  • Embeds specimens accurately.
  • Verifies CPT codes at the beginning of the microtomy process.
  • Cuts slides that are fully representative of the block and stains them with routine H and E stain.
  • Labels and distributes slides accurately.
  • Performs maintenance and Q.C. on all equipment in the area.
  • Communicates and documents any problems.
  • Accurately maintains slide and block files.
  • Orders send out tests following the procedure manual.
  • Filters stains, changes stains, washes stain dishes and cleans stainer according to QC chart.
  • Documents on QC chart when stains are filtered/changed.
  • Notifies Pathologist of any discrepancies with appearance of stainer.
  • Operates stainer according to type of specimen being stained.
  • Performs special stains in a timely manner.
  • Matches patient information to requisition and specimen received.
  • Follows procedure manual in the processing of all Cytology specimens.
  • Verifies CPT codes at the beginning of the cytology preparation process for accuracy.
  • Cleans and disinfects centrifuge and area per policy.
  • Unpacks and stores supplies as received.
  • Monitors and maintains supply levels.
  • Disposes of biohazard waste.
  • Files original requisitions numerically.
  • Files slides appropriately.
  • Performs maintenance and QC on all equipment.
  • Demonstrates understanding that all employees are responsible for patient safety.
  • Recognizes the importance of reporting errors and near misses to protect and improve patient process.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
