About The Position

Operates grinding tools following instructions and standard charts in applying knowledge of grinding procedures to ensure that surfaces and dimensions meet required specifications of finished work pieces. This role involves operating grinding and finishing equipment, setting up tools, reviewing blueprints, grinding and smoothing welds and metal surfaces, straightening workpieces, filing and sanding surfaces, inspecting workpieces, identifying nonconforming materials, removing finished workpieces, repairing minor defects, performing routine cleaning and maintenance, maintaining a safe work area, participating in training, and complying with quality system requirements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience required.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints and specifications required.
  • Basic computer literacy for labor entry and production reporting.
  • Knowledge of grinding techniques, abrasives, and finishing methods for various metal types.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and work instructions.
  • Knowledge of basic shop mathematics and measurement conversions.
  • Familiarity with precision measuring tools such as tape measures, calipers, and gauges.
  • Understanding of welding fundamentals and weld quality standards.
  • Ability to recognize surface defects, weld discontinuities, and dimensional variances.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to safely operate hand tools and power tools.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift materials as required, and perform repetitive motions.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in grinding, fabrication, welding, or manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Additional weld training will be available through Wayne Metals, LLC. Upon the discretion of the area manager.

Responsibilities

  • Operate grinding and finishing equipment according to the production schedule and departmental priorities.
  • Set up and adjust grinding tools and equipment to achieve specified surface finishes, tolerances, and weld appearances.
  • Review blueprints, drawings, and work instructions to determine appropriate grinding methods and finishing requirements.
  • Grind, blend, and smooth welds and metal surfaces to remove excess material, sharp edges, spatter, and imperfections.
  • Straighten workpieces and remove dents using straightening presses, hammers, and other hand tools as needed.
  • File, sand, or finish surfaces using prescribed hand tools and power tools to meet quality standards.
  • Inspect workpieces visually and with measuring tools to verify dimensional accuracy and surface quality.
  • Identify and segregate nonconforming or defective materials and notify supervision as required.
  • Remove finished workpieces from machines and place them in designated boxes, racks, or skids in an organized manner.
  • Repair minor cracks, dents, or weld defects using welding equipment while wearing required protective equipment (helmet, gloves, and other PPE) for all welding tasks regardless of size.
  • Perform routine cleaning and minor maintenance of grinding equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation; report equipment malfunctions promptly.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area at all times in compliance with company safety standards.
  • Participate in additional weld training and skill development opportunities as determined by the Shift Manager.
  • Comply with Wayne Metals, LLC quality system requirements, including defect prevention and waste reduction initiatives.
  • Repair cracks/dents using welding equipment. Must wear helmet and gloves for all welding regardless of size.
  • Conform to all Wayne Metals, LLC environmental policies, programs and procedures.
  • Conform to all State of Indiana laws and regulations.
  • Report any environmental concerns to supervisor, Environmental Management Representative or the Plant Manager.
