About The Position

Our client, a leading UK renewable energy developer, is delivering a major hydro project in the Scottish Highlands - a flagship contribution to UK energy security and net zero. An attractive opportunity to lead the design and client-side delivery of the Electrical High Voltage (EHV) package (275kV network design & build, connection and energisation) on the Project. The successful candidate will drive design & build progress and performance against project scope, cost and programme, and manage the interfaces with the EHV Designer and EHV Contractor, the Grid Transmission Owner (SSEN), the Main Works Civils contractor and the OEM contractors.

Requirements

  • A Tier 1 contractor or major-utility background - typically having held site-based senior project manager, project manager or section/package manager roles on a £70m+ UK/Europe HV/EHV connection, transmission or substation package.
  • Direct experience in 275kV (or higher) network connection, GIS/AIS substation design & build and energisation is essential.
  • Demonstrable NEC3/NEC4 ECC Option A experience in a client-side or contractor PM role, with strong working knowledge of NEC contract administration - Early Warnings, Compensation Events, the contract risk register and the Project Manager / Supervisor split of duties.
  • Experience leading complex HV/EHV interfaces and subcontract delivery within a multi-contract environment, including interfaces with the principal civils contractor and with the Transmission Owner.
  • Very good knowledge of site-based HSE processes and UK construction regulatory standards including CDM 2015, with experience and understanding of HSE expectations around energised plant, switching and HV safety rules.
  • Familiarity with the Grid Code and the Transmission Owner (SSEN) connection process and energisation requirements.
  • Very good working knowledge of construction quality and completions management systems, FAT/SAT regimes and pre-commissioning, sufficient to support the NEC Supervisor and client-side Quality Manager in delivering the ITP / NCR regime within the package.
  • Engineering qualification and chartership (essential) - Chartered Engineer (CEng) in a relevant electrical discipline (MIET or equivalent).
  • Working knowledge of project controls and risk management processes, and of construction planning and scheduling sufficient to interrogate contractor programmes and verify physical progress within the package.
  • Strong oral, written and graphic communication and presentation skills, with the discipline to produce contemporaneous site records that will stand up to contractual and audit scrutiny.

Nice To Haves

  • UK and/or international experience delivering large-scale HV/EHV connection, transmission or substation projects is preferred; equivalent experience on comparable major power schemes will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the design phase of the EHV contract, then provide client representation on site for the package - driving contractor performance against the accepted programme, project milestones, KPIs, budget and quality requirements, and escalating issues as needed.
  • Manage the design development of the 275kV network through FEED verification and Value Engineering, detailed design for procurement, and IFC detailed design stages, coordinating closely with: SSEN as Transmission Owner on connection design, protection settings, earthing, interface drawings and Grid Code/connection compliance; the Main Works Civils (MWC) contractor on civil/electrical interfaces (cable routes, ducts, plinths, building penetrations, earthing and bonding, and AIS platform handover) and design coordination; the OEM contractor on plant interfaces (generator transformer, GIS feeder bays, protection and SCADA tie-ins); driving design review, change control and timely release of IFC information to support the construction programme.
  • Lead risk review of EHV Contractor activities within the package, identifying and mitigating health, safety, environmental and constructability risks, and feeding into the contract risk register.
  • Act as NEC Project Manager for the EHV package and as the named responsible person in the SSEN agreement.
  • Route site-driven design queries and field changes affecting design intent from the EHV Contractor to the Engineering Manager for resolution, and coordinate any consequential changes to programme or sequencing with the relevant delivery manager.
  • Engage actively with the EHV Contractor through mobilisation, supply, installation, testing, commissioning, energisation and handover to drive performance against project safety, cost and programme requirements.
  • Accountable for the monitoring and oversight of FAT activities for all electrical equipment, and for providing support to Commissioning during System Acceptance Testing.
  • Accountable for completions and pre-commissioning of the HV system, and for supporting the OEM during dynamic commissioning and first synchronisation.
  • Ensure the EHV Contractor's programme and works remain aligned with the project target milestones (e.g. completion, pre-commissioning and readiness for dynamic commissioning).
  • Support the NEC Supervisor in delivering the Inspection and Test Plan regime within the package, ensuring the contractor gives the access, notice and witness opportunities required by the Project Quality Plan, and that NCRs and defects within the package are progressed and closed out.
  • Lead the day-to-day Transmission Owner (SSEN) interface and energisation activities - AIS platform handover, SSEN equipment installation and energisation of AIS-GIS cabling.
  • Support EHV Contractor compliance with environmental requirements, planning conditions and consents within the package, working with the Environmental Manager and the Project's environmental and consents leads.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a high-performance client-side site team within the package, including any direct reports allocated to the role.
