About The Position

A Greenhouse Supervisor plans and oversees the indoor and outdoor horticultural work involved in planting, maintaining, and developing municipal conservatories, office plantings and displays, and floral or seasonal indoor plant exhibits. The work of this class involves supervising horticultural and laboring personnel. Incumbents receive general supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional 5-day workweek, that may include weekend day, and are on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergencies due to violent or extreme weather, vandalism, or greenhouse support system failures or malfunctions. Work is performed in various greenhouses and conservatories and outdoors where conditions such as high temperatures and humidity, and unusual plant and insect pests may be encountered. The work requires moderate physical exertion when lifting and moving large plants and containers, and bags of soil and fertilizers.

Requirements

  • Have a bachelor’s degree in horticulture from an accredited college or university.
  • Have one year of supervisory responsibilities as disciplining, evaluating the performance of, and recommending the hiring, firing, and promoting of others.
  • Have an accredited high school diploma or GED certification and five years of experience in horticulture, landscape or floral design work.
  • Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit.
  • Possession of a Pesticide Application license is required within one year of appointment to positions in this class.

  • Ability to use office equipment including computers and office software.
