About The Position

The Greenhouse Instructor oversees the daily operation of the ARC greenhouse and surrounding gardens while teaching, supervising, and mentoring patients in their role as students. This position combines horticultural management, education, and program coordination responsibilities, creating an engaging and therapeutic environment where students can learn all aspects of horticulture, develop practical skills, and explore creative work. The instructor is responsible for maintaining plant health, managing greenhouse and garden operations, and providing a variety of learning opportunities that are responsive to student interests and needs. Working collaboratively with the Activities Program and other campus departments, the instructor supports students in building on their strengths, fostering personal growth, and developing new capabilities. The role requires flexibility in scheduling to meet the changing needs of both plants and students throughout the year.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in professional horticulture environment or related field, with a demonstrated knowledge of greenhouse plants, herbs, annuals and perennials.
  • Knowledge of plant care and greenhouse operations
  • Demonstrated interest in horticulture as a tool for engagement and skill-building
  • Comfortable working in a non-clinical, therapeutic environment
  • Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries while fostering a supportive and structured atmosphere
  • Ability to manage seasonal growing conditions and troubleshoot plant health issues
  • Experience supervising or mentoring others
  • Ability to teach practical skills to individuals with varying levels of experience
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain consistency and structure in daily operations
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced/Continuing Education in related specialty strongly preferred.
  • Teaching experience is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing daily care of all plants on campus
  • Supervises working group of students
  • Provides hands-on guidance and training
  • Organizing weekly meetings and onboarding new students
  • Collaborates across departments to provide plants, greenery, flowers and herbs, for events and various sessional activities
