About The Position

Global Energy Monitor is seeking an experienced Grants Finance Manager to join our Finance & Operations team. The Grants Finance Manager is responsible for ensuring that all grant funding is tracked, allocated, and spent in alignment with funder requirements. A key member of the Finance & Operations team & Development team, this role also works closely with Program Directors to build grant budgets, monitor spending, and prepare financial reports. The Grants Finance Manager maintains a clear, organization-wide view of how grants support programs, staff, and operations. They help program staff understand available funding and identify gaps. This position also builds and improves systems for tracking grant finances across multiple funding sources. GEM is funded primarily through a complex portfolio of restricted program grants, alongside a growing base of more flexible funding. As the organization has scaled, so has the need for stronger systems and clearer visibility into how funds are managed. This role plays a central part in building and maintaining that infrastructure by creating reliable, organization-wide insight into how grants support programs and staff, while improving the tools and processes that support planning, compliance, and decision-making across teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 3+ years of relevant prior experience managing grant budgets or nonprofit finances.
  • Strong understanding of budgets and grant restrictions.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and stay organized.
  • Strong communicator who can explain financial information clearly.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Collaborative, service-oriented approach to supporting staff.
  • Intermediate spreadsheet skills.
  • Comfortable in a remote work environment.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Candidates must currently reside and work within the United States.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without current or future visa sponsorship (including H-1B and F-1/OPT/CPT).

Responsibilities

  • Work with Program Directors and Development staff to build grant budgets for proposals.
  • Manage multiple grant budgets with different restrictions across programs.
  • Lead grant expense allocation process.
  • Own tracking of grant spending to ensure grant funds are used correctly and stay on budget.
  • Maintain a clear understanding of what each grant funds, including staff and program costs.
  • Flag funding gaps or budget issues early and share with leadership.
  • Prepare financial reports for funders.
  • Ensure that financials match the narratives of grant reports.
  • Track deadlines and restrictions to keep grants in compliance.
  • Collaborate with Development colleagues to communicate with funders about budget amendments and no cost extensions, as needed.
  • Support for contract management and misc. grant administration.
  • Maintain a full picture of all grant funding across the organization.
  • Track which programs, roles, and costs each grant supports.
  • Build simple month-by-month views of funding and expenses. Grow this to include 3-year funding projections by program.
  • Help teams use this information for planning and fundraising.
  • Build and improve tools and processes that help staff understand their grant budgets and funding.
  • Play a key role in shaping how the organization manages and plans around grant funding.
  • Turn complex financial data into clear, useful insights for teams across the organization.
  • Be a go-to resource for questions about grants and budgets.
  • Support cross-team coordination when required.
  • Explain financial information in clear, simple terms.
  • Help teams stay aligned on how grant funds are used.
