About The Position

The Grant Writer will serve as a senior proposal development professional responsible for identifying, assessing, and pursuing strategic external funding opportunities that align with Arizona State University’s global engagement, international education, workforce development, English language education, and public diplomacy priorities. This position will monitor federal funding opportunities from the U.S. Department of State, U.S. embassies, Regional English Language Offices (RELOs), and other sponsors; conduct opportunity analysis; coordinate proposal development efforts; and lead the preparation of competitive, high-quality grant applications. The Grant Writer will work closely with academic units, research centers, and external partners to develop compelling proposals that advance ASU’s international sponsored project portfolio.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and seven (7) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying and pursuing competitive federal grant opportunities, particularly from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), Regional English Language Offices (RELOs), USAID, or similar international sponsors.
  • Experience leading the development of complex, multi-partner proposals with budgets exceeding $500,000.
  • Strong understanding of federal grant regulations, proposal requirements, and sponsor review processes.
  • Experience analyzing funding opportunities and developing go/no-go recommendations based on strategic fit, competitiveness, budget, and institutional capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple proposal development efforts simultaneously while meeting strict deadlines.
  • Experience collaborating with faculty, researchers, administrators, and external organizations in a complex organizational environment.
  • Excellent written communication, editing, and project management skills.
  • Knowledge of international education, workforce development, English language education, public diplomacy, capacity-building, or global engagement programs.
  • Experience developing proposal narratives, logic models, monitoring and evaluation frameworks, and program implementation plans.
  • Demonstrated success securing external funding through competitive grant applications.
  • Proficiency with funding databases and opportunity tracking systems, including Grants.gov and related sponsor platforms.
  • Evidence of strong analytical skills and the ability to translate sponsor priorities into actionable proposal strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and proactively identify funding opportunities from U.S. government agencies, international organizations, foundations, and other sponsors, with particular emphasis on U.S. Department of State programs and international education initiatives.
  • Conduct strategic analyses of Notices of Funding Opportunity (NOFOs), Requests for Proposals (RFPs), and related solicitations to assess alignment with institutional priorities and competitiveness.
  • Develop and maintain funding opportunity pipelines, calendars, and forecasting tools to support proposal planning and decision-making.
  • Lead the development, writing, editing, and submission of complex grant proposals, concept papers, and other funding applications.
  • Coordinate proposal development teams involving faculty, researchers, program staff, finance personnel, and external partners.
  • Gather, synthesize, and translate technical, academic, and programmatic information into persuasive proposal narratives tailored to sponsor requirements.
  • Develop proposal outlines, compliance matrices, work plans, logic models, and other proposal development tools.
  • Collaborate with budget and administrative personnel to ensure proposed activities, staffing plans, and budgets align with sponsor requirements and institutional policies.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with sponsor representatives, partner organizations, and internal stakeholders to strengthen funding competitiveness.
  • Track proposal outcomes, funding trends, and sponsor priorities to inform future business development strategies.
  • Support the development of institutional capability statements, proposal templates, past performance materials, and other business development resources.
  • Provide guidance and recommendations to leadership regarding strategic funding opportunities and proposal investments.
