About The Position

The Baylor University Institute for Oral History (BUIOH) is seeking graduate student employees to serve as Graduate Student Editors. This role involves auditing and editing interview transcripts for accuracy, proper noun and terminology research, creating abstracts, and maintaining confidentiality. The position requires a minimum of 10 hours per week, with flexibility in scheduling between 8 am and 5 pm. The work environment is expected to be quiet, clean, and efficient, with a focus on maintaining professionalism and respecting the confidentiality of materials.

Requirements

  • Must be a graduate student.
  • Ability to listen to interview recordings and read transcripts simultaneously.
  • Attention to detail for correcting transcript errors.
  • Proficiency in researching proper nouns and field-specific terminology.
  • Familiarity with style guides such as the Chicago Manual of Style and dictionaries like Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary.
  • Ability to create concise and informative abstracts.
  • Understanding and adherence to confidentiality policies.
  • Reliability in maintaining a work schedule and submitting reports on time.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and organized workspace.
  • Professional conduct, including refraining from personal phone use and excessive conversation during work hours.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with oral history transcription or editing.
  • Familiarity with the BUIOH Style Manual.

Responsibilities

  • Audit-check transcripts by listening to interview recordings and comparing them to the written transcript for accuracy, correcting errors, and deciphering unclear words.
  • Research and verify the spelling and form of all proper nouns and field-specific terminology using authoritative sources, formatting unverified words as (??).
  • Edit transcripts for spelling, punctuation, capitalization, hyphenation, and typographical style, while preserving the interviewee's original grammar and word choice. Omit frequently repeated vocal mannerisms as needed.
  • Create abstracts of interviews using a provided model to identify main topics and serve as a guide for researchers.
  • Respect the confidentiality of all materials handled, refraining from discussing in-process transcripts with anyone outside of BUIOH faculty and staff.
  • Arrive to work on time, establish and follow a work schedule, and notify supervisors in advance of any inability to work a scheduled time.
  • Complete and submit worklogs and time cards for approval after the last work session of each two-week pay period.
  • Maintain a quiet, clean, and efficient work area, keeping it free of trash, food, and drink.
  • Refrain from phone calls, texting, or personal internet browsing during working hours, stepping into the hallway for personal calls.
  • Keep personal conversations to a minimum and speak softly to avoid disrupting others.
