About The Position

United States Steel Corporation has an opening for an Engineering Intern based at our Automotive Center in Troy, MI. The Engineering Intern will work under the direction of a Product Application Engineer to support U. S. Steel’s OEM and Tier Automotive Customers in the use of U.S. Steel’s various products, including Advanced High Strength Steels for mass reduction and performance enhancement, along with laboratory experience for hands-on material testing and characterization. This position will provide the student with exposure to various aspects of U.S. Steel’s overall business, as well as interaction with multiple groups within the corporation providing a well-rounded knowledge of the company’s Engineering services and automotive customers.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled as a full-time student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Engineering
• Completion of sophomore year and be in good academic standing
• Ability to start work in summer of 2027 and beyond
• Ability and willingness to work an average of 40 hrs/week during the summer
• Continuation of an acceptable grade point average while participating in the program
• Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
• Excellent planning and organization skills
• Computer literacy to a working skills level - proficient with Microsoft Office products, especially Excel

Responsibilities

• Conducting material characterization testing to support new steel development and root cause analysis of field issues
• Developing an understanding of U. S. Steel’s products, including Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) used by the automotive industry
• Supporting customers in the application of U. S. Steel’s products in new applications including: Developing internal work requests for assessing performance of USS’s steel products through forming simulations and material investigations
• Developing and delivering presentations to customers with results from work requests
• Developing and presenting an internal proposal for a new automotive application utilizing U. S. Steel materials.
