About The Position

The Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) for the Office for General Education (OGE) assists with the development, rollout, ongoing support, professional grading, data collection, and assessment of Legends 101 and Legends 201, University-wide compass courses for new first-time freshman students and first-time transfer students. The GSA attends assigned classes to assist with classroom activities, teach, and/or share information with students and faculty. They grade coursework for Legends courses as assigned and hold office hours to support students in Legends coursework. The role involves answering student questions via email, phone, web conference, chat, text, and in person, and providing constructive feedback to students. Additionally, the GSA assists with data collection and data analysis, collaborates with OGE staff to develop ideas for engaging students in Legends courses and to professionalize the GSA role, and supports evaluation efforts by offering ideas for improving evaluation tools. The Office for General Education (OGE) works to develop and deliver General Education programming to University of Alabama undergraduate students as a part of the University's plan for student retention and success.

Requirements

  • Current University of Alabama graduate student.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Ability to work 10 to 20 hours per week.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn teaching, grading, data collection and reporting.
  • Desire to learn study skills and academic resources for undergraduates and how best to share these in support of students.
  • Ability to support the delivery of Legends courses through in-person support of Legends students and faculty in the classroom and in office hours, as well as in grading assignments, offering constructive feedback, and contributing to the morale and spirit of the OGE graduate student team.
  • Ability to supervise groups of undergraduate students, deliver lessons as needed, and assist with data collection and reporting.
  • Must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment.
  • Must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters.
  • International Students must be registered full-time (Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters.
  • Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment.
  • Final candidate(s) must successfully pass a pre-employment background investigation and information obtained from social media and other internet sources.
