A Graduate Assistant is used primarily to designate a graduate student who has been assigned responsibilities in an instructional department. A Research Assistant is a graduate student working towards a Master's or Ph.D. degree. An appointment as a research assistant is appropriate if the activity performed by the research assistant is primarily for the benefit of the individual's course of study and research and directly applicable to the individual's thesis or dissertation. A Teaching Assistant is a graduate student who is enrolled in the University of Wisconsin system who is regularly assigned teaching and related responsibilities, other than manual or clerical responsibilities, under the supervision of a member of the faculty.
